chapter six
looking at me

"SO IS THIS LIKE WASHABLE PAINT that gets chucked at us?" sage said, sitting on her bed as she spoke to ella. "i think so, last year it stained me. so slightly washable!" ella said.

"it's washable, don't worry sage. that's just the year ella broke out in a rash from poison ivy, it looked like she was stained red. besides, they put a bunch of colored paint..which is why it's called color jam." peggy said.

sage was dressed in all white, matching every other camp rocker. it was color jam day, or color war as some people called it.

like every other jam, everyone would perform a special piece that they prepared but then once it was over everyone would break out into a large battle of paint.

there would be large bottles hidden, paint filled balloons in buckets, play guns with paint inside, just an intense water fight but with paint instead.

after an intense fight with tess the previous night, sage has finally got her way out of being a background singer, fed up after doing it twice already.

she was going to perform one of the many songs she had written, which she originally was going to perform at final jam until she teamed up with barron and sander to make the best performance ever.

"oh i finally get to see the allstar perform, not as a background." shane said. "i really don't need you breathing down my neck before i go on." sage said, glaring at shane next to him.

"this doesn't have anything to do with my brothers being here, right?" shane said. "if you think i'm trying to impress then especially the one you always talk about..you're wrong. don't believe me, just listen to the lyrics of my song." sage smiled.

"soo, nate. curly head, what'd you think?" shane said. "he's cute." sage shrugged.

"you think that?!" shane said, moving back in shock. "yeah. he's cute, all of you are cute. and he's a great singer." sage said.

"is he the cutest?" shane said. "i don't know, i don't know him. he's cute on the outside but is he cute on the inside is the question." sage said.

"next up with her first time singing solo solo, sage dean!"

"think about that." sage said to shane, then going on stage.

sage walked up, feeling a bit empty as she had no instrument with her. she couldn't even have her drumsticks in her pocket because she didn't want them to get covered in paint.

she calmed down seeing caitlyn and mitchie on the front row, smiling at her and giving her some thumbs ups."

"this is for all you people who have massive egos, and for the people who just need a confidence boost." sage said.

she gave a thumbs up to the band behind her, and she started to sing. "ooh, oooh, yeah." she vocalized at the beginning.

"did i catch your attention? you look like you lost your breath." sage sang. "when i circle the room, you an owl, you gon' twist your head."

some of her dancer friends came onto the stage, starting choreography they had made up a few hours prior.

"don't you come at me green with an attitude where my lips and my soles are at. if i leave you behind, you can look for the broken necks." sage said.

"no, no."

"cause i've been here once or twice never worry 'bout the eyes." she saw the boy in the audience, always forgetting what his name was when she saw him.

"don't just stand there staring, honey try to move your feet." sage said, joining in on the choreography.

"if you think they're looking at you, they're looking at me." she sang, pointing two fingers at the crowd and then to herself.

"i could make it nice and easy, i'ma take the lead. they ain't even looking at you, baby."

the instrumental started playing, sage going fully into the choreography her friends made. her other friends in the audience cheered and yelled for sage, finally seeing her perform.

"they're looking at me, they're looking at me." she says pointing to herself. "yeah, yeah, they're looking at me."

"yes, i'm young for a teacher, i'll teach you what you don't know." sage sang the next last time.

"but i can't give it up all at once, you would overflow."

sage continued to sing as he performed, truly being happy as she did. not only was a cute boy watching her but the camp was enjoying her music, her friends were dancing with her, and she had other friends who were cheering for her.

camp was was genuinely an amazing camp. maybe they didn't focus heavily on music but they still did, but then also included fun and friendships. and if sage knew anything from all the disney movies she's watched, camps are supposed to be fun.

"it could be you and me, but you know that i'll steal the show, oh!" sage belted, shane yelping for her at the back of the crowd.

"cause i've been here once or twice." she sang. "never worry 'bout the eyes, never worry 'bout the eyes."

"yeah sage!" sander and barron yelled out, "show them!" mitchie yelled. sage smiled at her friend, pointing at them as she sang her next line.

"don't just stand there staring, honey try to move your feet. if you think they're looking at you, they're looking at me." sage sang, dancing at the same time.

"i could make it nice and easy. i'ma take the lead. they ain't even looking at you, baby."

"they're looking at me."

sage continued to dance for the chorus, getting towards the end of her song. she knew this fun wasn't going to last, especially for the next summer so sage completely let loose.

she danced, smiled, performed like she was about to go to jail and never do it again. that wasn't totally a lie though...so it's not like she was wrong.
