chapter eight
friends come and go

"NATE? YOU GUYS JUST GOT ON the road, why are you calling me already?" shane said, as he sat in his cabin with anger still in him.

"i started writing this song, i need you to hear it." nate said. "please say no, he even has his guitar and won't stop playing it!" jason said.

"first no birdhouse and now this, i can't catch a break!" he said, slouching in his chair.

"let's hear it, that can be another song we bring up to label." shane said.

"okay here's the chorus." nate said, getting the cords ready on his guitar. "cause i never really noticed, took a while for me to see, playing back the moments. now i'm starting to believe that you could be at the show and know every word." nate sang.

"but it's you who makes me sing, and i know where we are and i know who i am baby, i'm your biggest fan." he sang.

"that with some back vocals, and like the clapper and of course drums and bass, do you hear the vision?" nate said.

"yeah, yeah! that's good." shane said. "see i told you he would like it." nate said.

"i don't care, i'm sick of hearing it." jason said. "i'm sick of hearing you complain and talk about your birdhouse." nate said.

"you could've asked him for something instead of taking your jealousy out on me." jason said.

"i'm not—"

"guys." shane said, cutting them off. "it's that girl, it's making him lose his mind. and write that terrible song." jason said.

"of course it's about sage." shane said. "just don't bring that bias to final jam, she's really talented too."

"i know." nate said, smiling and shaking his head. "okay loverboy, that's enough." jason said.

"speaking of sage, she's stomping her way to my cabin." shane said. "wait don't hang up, maybe she's coming to talk about me, we had really good moments today." nate said.

"didn't she ditch you in one?" jason said. "hey
she—" "if you gust want to stay on the phone you have to shut up." shane said.

sage entered shane's cabin, slamming the door aggressively. "woah, what's your deal?" shane said.

"you're my deal! you had no right to yell at mitchie like that!" sage yelled. "she lied to me, she lied to everyone, she lied to you! i feel betrayed, so i did have a right. i don't know why you're defending her." shane said.

"have — you — lost — brain — cells — from —
all — that — head — banging." sage said, poking the middle of shane's forehead in between every word.

"ouch! i think i just lost all of mine with your heavy hand, geez sage!" shane said rubbing his forehead.

"like you had any to lose!" sage yelled. "mitchie whether her mom is a cook or the president of hit tunes tv china is still the same mitchie!" sage yelled.

"she still lied." shane said. "you lie about your personality to the world, she just lied about her background. her personality is still the exact same, yet you have two different ones and thing that's okay to you?" sage said.

"it's not the same thing." shane said. "it's the same thing shane. and not only is she an outcast to the whole camp, but guess what, you lost the only two people who you were you're real self too." sage said.

"two?" shane said. "maybe you're right, you only have one personality. you're a jerk, and a terrible person. i don't want to be friends with someone like that." sage said.

she scoffed, and then turned around and left shane's cabin. shane was quiet in shock, watching sage leave.

he had just lost the only two people be spoke to at camp, and to be honest he felt a little bad for mitchie.

"and she can call you out? she's definitely my soulmate." nate said. shane forgot his brothers were on the phone, hearing that entire conversation.

"oh my gosh" shane said, hanging up the phone and putting face palming.

"hello?" dana said as she answered the phone. "dana, oh my gosh, i'm so happy you answered." sage said.

"i miss you so much sage." dana said. "i miss you, i am so ready to come home." sage sighed.

"this is so stressful." sage said. "i couldn't imagine. trying to take down a whole came at fifteen?" dana said.

"it's not even that! i mean yeah that, i kinda haven't been going with dad's plan. i actually haven't been trying to take them down." sage said.

"really?" dana said, shock in her tone. "everyone is so happy here, and it's actually so much fun! i've had so much fun this summer, like more fun than i think i have had my whole life. dana i wish you could go here it's like amazing." sage said.

"i wish. dad would never let me go there, or you." dana said. "yeah i'm just enjoying the fun, i'll deal with his wrath when i get home. i've made such great friends too, i'm scared to betray them."

"how about boys?" dana said. "well..there is one..but not really. he's the brother of one of my friends who i just stopped being friends with actually." sage said.

"wait what, okay sage fill me in right now." dana said. sage smiled, missing her sister deeply but feeling happy again.

"okay so—"
