Chapter 27:
The next morning, Avni stood waiting by the college parking lot, anxiously glancing around as she hugged her books tightly to her chest. Her mind was racing, a mix of nerves and anticipation swirling as she waited for Neil to arrive.
Soon, Neil’s car pulled into the lot, with DD in the passenger seat. As he parked, Neil noticed Avni standing alone, looking at her phone. A puzzled look crossed his face.
“What is she doing here?” Neil asked, glancing over at DD. “I thought she was avoiding me.”
DD, catching the subtle excitement in Neil's voice, tried to hide a knowing smile. “How do I know? She’s right there, so go talk to her. I’ve got something to check out in the library anyway. Good luck!” With a quick pat on Neil's shoulder, DD got out and walked away, leaving Neil no choice but to approach her.
Neil walked up to her, crossing his arms casually as he observed her focused on typing something on her phone. “Hi, Avni,” he greeted, his voice holding a hint of surprise and amusement.
Avni quickly looked up, her fingers freezing mid-text. “Hey, Neil,” she replied, quickly putting her phone away. She clutched her books a little tighter, hugging them closer to her chest as if they were some kind of shield.
Neil chuckled, tilting his head slightly. “I thought you were avoiding me.” His tone was light, but there was a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
Caught off guard, Avni looked down, biting her lip nervously. She couldn’t find the right words and just stared at the ground. Before she could even respond, Neil burst out laughing, unable to contain himself.
Avni’s cheeks reddened. “Why are you laughing?” she asked, embarrassed, feeling her heart thumping louder.
“You look so cute!” Neil said through his laughter, reaching out to playfully pinch her cheek. Avni froze, her heart skipping a beat as she felt her face warm with a blush she couldn’t hide.
Recovering his composure, Neil grinned, “Come on, let’s go. I’m starving. Let’s grab some breakfast.” Without waiting for a reply, he gently placed an arm around her shoulder, guiding her toward the canteen. His touch was light yet protective, as if he was instinctively shielding her from the world.
As they walked, Avni’s mind was a flurry of emotions. Each step beside him seemed surreal, his arm around her shoulder both comforting and nerve-wracking. And though she barely spoke, she could feel the quiet thrill of being close to Neil, realizing just how much she didn’t want this moment to end.

Later that evening, Avni was lounging on her bed, flipping through a magazine with no particular focus, when her phone suddenly rang. Glancing at the screen, she saw it was Sunehri calling.
“Hey, Sunehri, what’s up?” Avni answered, resting the magazine on her chest.
“Nothing much. Do you have any plans tonight?” Sunehri asked.
“Nope, nothing planned. Why?” Avni replied, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
“Perfect! Be ready—I’m almost there. We’re going out.” Sunehri said, sounding excited.
“Where are we going?” Avni asked.
“To Neil’s place,” Sunehri replied, almost too casually.
Avni’s eyebrows shot up. “Wait, what? Why? Did something happen?”
“Relax, Avni,” Sunehri reassured her. “Nothing happened. I just want you to spend some time with him. Remember? You said you’d try being a bit selfish. So, here’s your chance!”
