My bed was really comfortable for whatever reason this morning, and I really didn't want to get up, let alone open my eyes. I was too comfortable and warm under the duvet to want to get out and deal with reality. Letting out a sigh, I shifted onto my back, which actually made my eyes shoot open and my entire body freeze.
Glancing down, I clocked Katie's hand draped across my bare stomach because my shirt had ridden up during the night. A faint smile appeared on my face as my heart skipped a beat; I turned my head slightly, not realising how close Katie's face was to my shoulder.
She was a sound sleeper, and I knew she wouldn't be waking up anytime soon, especially on our off day. So I decided to simply admire the way the sun cast down on her brown hair that was slightly messy but still looked pretty. And admire the way she looked perfect even when asleep in my bed.
As much as I wanted to push my luck and cuddle into her, I decided against it because I wanted to build trust with her before anything else. She meant too much to me, and I didn't want to mess up my chances if I even had a second one to begin with.
Instead, I carefully slipped out of her grip and pulled the duvet back over her body, then made my way into the kitchen for some much-needed coffee. I needed caffeine before I could properly function this morning; my whole body was sore, and I probably needed to get in some recovery stretching and whatnot. That could wait, though.
It wasn't long until Katie appeared at the bar top, resting her head on her hand. "Sleep well?" I asked with an amused look.
She only hummed in response, clearly still not fully awake. I fought a laugh before placing a cup of coffee in front of her, which earned me a quiet thank you in return. Leaning back against the countertop, I sipped my own coffee, glancing across the kitchen towards Katie. I didn't understand how someone could look so pretty even when they've just rolled out of bed.
"What?" Her accent was thick, laced with sleep.
"Hm?" I snapped out of my trance at the sound of her voice.
"You were staring."
"Oh," a faint smile formed at her lips, but she didn't say anything else. Simply opting for the comfortable silence between us. "Breakfast?" I asked.
"Please."
With a nod, I turned and stepped towards the fridge to grab eggs. I wasn't by any means an amazing cook, but I could get by, and I knew how to make good food. Though when it came to baking cookies, it was my specialty. I hadn't baked much since moving, which made me frown at the thought.
"Yous got any plans today?" Katie's voice gained my attention as I looked over my shoulder towards the Irish woman.
"Don't think so; maybe head into the training centre for recovery later. Other than that, probably just a lazy day." I thought about it knowing the ACL squad would be in the gym today, and I loved hanging out with them from time to time.
"Maybe a movie then later?" Katie suggested, "I've got a few errands to run this afternoon, so maybe you could come to mine when I get back?"
"Yeah, I'd love that." I turned back to the stove in order to hide the way a blush had begun creeping onto my face. I loved getting to spend time with Katie, and if she was offering, I wasn't going to ever say no. It was quiet for a while; the only sounds really came from the eggs cooking in the pan. The silence was comfortable, though it wasn't filled with the usual tension or unspoken words that filled the gap between us. We'd begun to move forward into better territory. We were friends, and that was okay with me for right now because I didn't want her to push me away; I wanted her to trust me.
