"Race!" I yell trying to catch him at the distribution center one morning. "Race!"
He had been ignoring me since the night I told him about Max. In a way, his ignoring me had a good side. He never asked or even talked about Max the way the other boys did.
But, on the other hand, I missed it. I missed his smile, his voice, his presents around me. I missed him.
"Race!" I yell grabbing his wrist to prevent him from walking any further. "Stop. Ok, look, we both need to talk about-"
"There is nothing to talk about," he mumbles.
"Race. I know your mad but if you child just listen-"
"There is nothing to talk about!" he says yanking his wrist away. "I found someone new."
"Oh, um," I look down. "What's her name?"
"Catherine. But her friends call her Cat."
"What's she like?"
"She's s Harlem. Tall, blond, beautiful," he says with a smirk.
"How nice. She sounds...great," I reply not looking up.
"She is."
After a few minuets of silence I find the right words. "Race about what happened-"
"Forget it Sam," he interrupts. "It's over. In fact, I can't believe I even liked you to begin with. Cat is beautiful and kind and smart. I'm over you," he says walking off.
I stand there motionless as he walks off. Never in a million years did I ever imagine that Racetrack Higgins could be so rude. That's, when I decided my master plan.
I walked up to Davey. "Do you think you can watch Ross today?"
"Um," he says. "Sure, but why?"
"I have plans."
