The refuge hasn't changed much sense Ross was last here. If anything, it only got dirtier and darker. Come to think of it, it perfectly fits the personalities of Oscar and Morris.
"Just as dark and gross as ever."
I start to wander down the cold hallways, listening for the voices of the people I was in search for.
"I'm telling you, Oscar. With her brother locked away, she'll do anything!"
"Whatever, Morris. But, do we want to except what ever she offers, or keep her brother for a while longer until she's begging?"
Bingo. I silently follow the voices until I'm right outside their door.
"Begging? Come on Oscar she wouldn't go that low."
"It's her brother. I'm sure she would do anything to get him back."
I look down at my clothes and mumble. "You're both right." Closing my eyes, I quietly knock on the door.
"Come in."
I slowly open the door. "Um...hey guys."
Oscar and Morris both automatically stand up, but stop and look me up and down.
"What are you doing here? Dressed like...that?" Oscar finally asks.
"Well hello to you too," I say as I glance out the door. "I came to apologize."
Oscar looks at Morris and motions to the window. His brother walks over to the window, looking out for a second, before smirking. He closes the curtains and returns back to Oscar's side.
"Well," Oscar says, a smirk plastered on his face. "I'm sure we can find some way to forgive you."
I put in my best fake smile. "Great."
The two brothers slowly start walking over to me. In return, I slowly start walking back. "Can I help you?"
I jump as I hear a door slam shut behind me.
"Just relax, Sam. You can trust us," Morris snickers from behind me.
"To tell you the truth Morris, I don't really think I can. Both your brother and you went back on a deal. To me, that's not trust worthy."
I feel a hand run across my back. "Your brother made a mistake. It's only right that he gets punished," Oscar says in a low voice.
I turn around to face him. "What have you done to Ross?"
"Oh, your little brother? Just the regular deal. Here at the refuge we give young kids a safe haven to learn how to better help the world."
"Yeah. You do that by hurting them and stealing their food. Some help."
Morris suddenly grabs my arms, pulling them behind my back. "How did you get this information."
"I have my ways. Not to mention you guys make it pretty clear you hate the newsies. You kind of imply it yourself."
"Oh, did little Race tell you?" Oscar snickers.
"N-no. I found it out on my own. You two make it obvious on your own."
I feel one brother push me down so I'm sitting in a chair. "So what's the deal with you and Racetrack anyways?"
I shrug. "Friends."
"Just friends?"
"Why do you care?" I grin. "Do you two have a crush on him?"
I feel a sudden sting on my cheek.
"Shut up!" Oscar yells.
"You slapped me!"
"Serves you right doll. But, don't worry," Morris says, getting uncomfortably close to my face. "We're just getting started."
"With what?"
The two brothers exchange glances. "Just a bit of fun," Oscar finally says.
I sit up as tall as I can, not wanting to show any hint of fear. "You can't hurt me."
The two boys laugh. "Watch us."
I gulp and close my eyes. "Race, please hurry it up."
