I don't know how long I've been on the roof, but I stopped crying a while ago. Not because I wasn't sad anymore, but because I had run out of tears to cry. Instead, I had taken to throwing everything in sight.
"Those stupid Delancey brothers!" I yell throwing my hat. "They took the only important thing in my life from me! Again!" I yell as I toss one of Jack's pencils to the side. "Ross is gone, Sam! And it's all Your fault!!" I scream as I kick a can off the roof.
As I lean on a railing, I look out over the city and my eyes start to fill with tears again. "I'm so sorry, Ross. This is all my fault." That was the moment I started breaking down.
"Sam? Are you ok?"
I could recognize that voice anywhere. A voice that has inflicted so much hurt and pain, but so much happiness at the same time. However, I was not about to let him see me cry.
I quickly wipe the tears from my eyes. "What do you want, Race?"
"Well...um...I guess I want to know if your ok."
I roll my eyes. "I'm fine. I'm just thinking."
Race nods, but doesn't say anything. A silence hangs in the air before I let out an agitated sigh. "I'm sorry should I leave," I say sarcastically.
"No! I mean, no. You don't have to leave," Race says looking down.
We stand in silence for a while before I finally speak. "So, why are you up here?"
Race shrugs. "I don't know. I come here to think I guess."
I nod. "Yeah. That's why I'm up here."
Race slowly walks over to the railing so he is standing next to me. "It's a beautiful view."
I roll my eyes and walk away from him towards a stack of crates and sit down. "You better be talking about the city."
Race turns around. "For your sake I'll say I was."
I roll my eyes. "Why don't you go make out with Cat again. You looked pretty into it in Harlem. Of course, I guess a player like you is just happy when a girl gives you the time of day."
"Wow," Race says rubbing the back of his neck. "You're getting straight to the insults tonight."
I shrug a bit, trying to hide the fact that I feel bad for insulting him.
"Well, if you must know, Cat and I broke up."
I look up. "What? Why?"
Race looks down a bit, rubbing his neck once again. "I found out she was a cheater." He looks up and locks eyes with me, before looking away. "I didn't want to deal with that so I broke up with her."
"Wow, um, I'm sorry Race," I say.
Race shrugs. "It happens I guess. So, why are you up here?"
I sigh and bite my lip, holding back tears. "It's a....long story."
"I'm not going anywhere."
I sigh and look down. "Ross got taken to the refuge."
"What?" Race asks shocked as he walks over to me and sits next to me.
"A while back, Ross stole money from the distribution center. It was my fault. I didn't make enough money for food and he was hungry," I explain as I feel a tear fall down my cheek. "He was caught, but I made a deal with Oscar and Morris. They would let him out of I have them half of my earnings for a year."
"You did that?" Race asks quietly.
"I didn't exactly have a choice, Race. It was that or have Ross stuck in the refuge." I sigh and I put my head in my hands. "But, it doesn't matter. They decided to lock him up anyways. He's gone, and it's all my fault."
