Yoko sat at the dining table, her laptop open as she typed with quiet focus. The soft clatter of keys filled the air until it was interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps and Mikey's excited voice.
"They agreed! Look, Yoko!" Mikey shouted, her small face alight with joy as she waved an RSVP card in her hand. She practically bounced into the room, holding the card out like it was the most important thing in the world.
Yoko took it, reading over the elegant handwriting that alternated between Louis' childish scrawl and Madame Lavigne's polished script. "They went with the park option," Yoko said, her tone warm as she looked up at Mikey.
"I knew they'd say yes!" Mikey said proudly, her chest puffed out like she had orchestrated the entire thing herself.
Yoko smiled softly, glancing at her watch. "11 a.m.," she said, her tone shifting to one of practicality. "We'd better get going."
Mikey's eyes widened in sudden panic. "I need my sketchbook!" she exclaimed, already dashing toward her room. "And extra pencils!" She reappeared moments later, shoving a bundle of art supplies into Yoko's arms.
Yoko chuckled as she tried to balance the growing pile. "All right, all right. Anything else?"
"Louis will want to see Captain Feather!" Mikey shouted, referring to her beloved rubber duck. She darted back into her room and emerged moments later with the toy clutched tightly in her hands.
"And the biscuits!" Mikey yelled, her voice trailing off as she ran around the penthouse, gathering and tossing more items at Yoko—her bag, a hat, even a small blanket.
By the time Mikey was satisfied, Yoko's arms were full, and she gave the little girl a bemused look. "Ready now?" she asked teasingly.
"Ready!" Mikey chirped, leading the way to the door.
As they reached the door, Faye's voice stopped them. "Have fun," she said, her tone soft and warm. She stood a few feet away, her hands resting casually in her pockets, but her eyes held an affectionate light as they lingered on Mikey.
Yoko turned slightly, catching Faye's gaze. "Sure we can't tempt you?" she asked softly, her voice holding a hint of hope.
Faye smiled, but it was tinged with restraint. "We agreed—nannies only, to keep things easy for the kids," she explained, her tone practical.
"Nannies only?" Yoko repeated, one brow arching playfully as if to challenge the idea.
Faye sighed, a small grin tugging at her lips. "...With security at a distance," she admitted.
Yoko tilted her head, a smirk playing on her face. "Can I have Adam, then?" she asked with mock sweetness.
"You're getting Nico," Faye replied, crossing her arms as her smile widened. "He's already waiting in the car."
"If I must," Yoko said with an exaggerated sigh, though her smile softened as she glanced back at Mikey, now carefully clutching her duck and the RSVP card. "We'll keep her safe," Yoko promised, her voice quieter but filled with conviction.
"I know you will," Faye said, her smile softening into something more genuine, more vulnerable. For a moment, their gazes lingered on each other, unspoken trust passing between them.
Yoko nodded, then turned to follow Mikey out the door. As they left, Faye stood in the quiet penthouse, her smile lingering as she watched them go. They'll be all right, she thought, though the faint knot of worry in her chest reminded her how much they had come to mean to her.
