Kendall walked down the hallway of the hotel, her heart heavy with each step. She had been thinking about this moment all night—the way Olive had pulled away from her, how things between them felt like they were teetering on the edge. She had never been so sure of anything in her life. She loved Olive, and no matter how complicated things had gotten, she needed to tell her. She had to say it.
Her mind raced, replaying the last few days—the tension, the unspoken words, the way Olive had pulled away whenever things felt too real. But tonight, Kendall had seen the signs. She could feel it. She knew Olive had feelings for her, even if she wouldn't admit it yet. She just needed to make her see it, make her understand that they could be more than this mess they were stuck in.
When she reached the door, she took a deep breath, smoothing down her dress as she knocked lightly. "Olive?" she called softly, her voice trembling with nervous anticipation.
There was no answer at first, but she could hear movement from inside. Kendall knocked again, more urgently this time. "Olive, please. I need to talk to you."
Finally, the door opened, and Olive stood there, looking disheveled, her eyes wide with surprise and something else—something Kendall couldn't quite place. Behind her, the room was dim, and Kendall noticed Gabe's absence immediately.
"I—" Olive started, but Kendall didn't let her finish.
"I need to tell you something," Kendall said, her voice cracking with emotion. She stepped closer, her heart pounding in her chest. "I love you, Olive. I've loved you for so long, and I can't keep pretending that I don't. I don't care about what happened with Matt or anyone else, I just... I need you to know."
Olive looked at her, her face unreadable. She stood frozen for a moment, and Kendall could see the conflict in her eyes. She knew this wasn't easy for Olive, that everything between them had been complicated and messy. But she couldn't hold it in anymore.
But then, Olive opened her mouth and said the words Kendall feared. "I don't know what to say, Kendall." Her voice was quiet, and there was a pained look in her eyes that made Kendall's stomach twist.
Kendall's heart dropped. "What do you mean?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I... I don't feel the same way," Olive whispered, her gaze dropping to the floor. "I don't know what I'm feeling right now, but it's not that."
Kendall's chest tightened, and she felt something cold seep into her bones. She had never been good at reading Olive, but she had hoped—prayed—that maybe there was something there. But hearing those words, feeling the weight of Olive's rejection hit her, made everything else seem to blur.
The silence stretched between them, heavy and painful. Kendall tried to hold it together, but she couldn't.
"Don't say that, Olive," she pleaded, her voice shaking. "I know you feel something for me. I can see it in your eyes. Please, just... just be honest with me."
Olive's eyes welled up, but she shook her head, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I can't, Kendall. I just can't. I'm sorry."
Kendall's breath caught in her throat. She wanted to scream, to cry, but she couldn't. All the words she had been holding in, the feelings she had spent so long burying, seemed to evaporate in an instant.
"If you can't say it back, then... I don't think we can do this," Kendall said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to be in limbo anymore. I can't keep pretending like everything's okay when it's not."
She turned to leave, the weight of everything pressing down on her chest. Just before she reached the door, she turned back to Olive, who was still standing there, eyes full of confusion and regret.
"Don't speak to me again, Olive," Kendall said, her voice breaking. She didn't wait for Olive to respond before she left the room, slamming the door behind her.
As she walked down the hallway, the reality of what had just happened sank in. She loved Olive, but it wasn't enough. She couldn't keep fighting for someone who couldn't give her the same in return. And as much as it hurt, Kendall knew she had to walk away.
