As Olive stood frozen in the chapter room, the silence was overwhelming. Kendall had just left, and her words lingered in the air like a heavy fog. Kendall had stood up for her, publicly and fiercely, and even though it was an unexpected and confusing moment, Olive couldn't help but feel a rush of gratitude. But there was still a lingering heaviness, a sense of loss—her position in the sorority was gone, and the approval of her sisters felt distant.
Olive stood there for a long moment, her mind racing, before she heard a familiar voice.
"Olive."
She turned to see her big, Julia, walking toward her with a concerned look on her face. Olive hadn't even noticed her presence earlier, but now that Julia was standing before her, it felt like everything else had quieted.
"I need to talk to you," Julia said gently, guiding Olive out of the room and into a quieter hallway.
Olive's heart thudded in her chest. "I don't know what to do, Jules. I—"
Before she could finish, Julia placed a hand on her shoulder, her voice firm but kind. "I know, Olive. I know what you're going through. And I need you to listen to me."
Olive frowned, unsure of what was coming. She had never really talked to Julia about this—about her feelings for Kendall or anyone else—but there was something in Julia's eyes that told her this wasn't the time for secrets.
"I'm not saying this because I think you need to hear it from me," Julia continued, her voice soft but resolute. "But I've been there. I was where you are now."
Olive blinked. "What do you mean?"
Julia sighed deeply, her eyes searching Olive's face. "I'm bi, Olive."
The words hung between them, shocking Olive to her core. She had never suspected. Julia had always seemed so confident, so sure of herself—how could she not have known? But now that it was out in the open, Olive felt a rush of emotions: confusion, relief, fear, and something else—a small flicker of hope.
"I know it's hard," Julia said softly, "but I need you to understand. It's okay. You don't have to know exactly what you are yet. But you don't need to hide, not from yourself, and not from anyone else. I'm here for you. You're not alone."
Olive's throat tightened as the weight of Julia's words settled over her. She had always felt different, unsure of where she fit in. She had spent so much time trying to please everyone, trying to live up to expectations that weren't even her own. But hearing Julia, her big, someone who had always seemed so put together, say this—it was like a veil was being lifted.
"I don't know what to do," Olive whispered. "I don't know if I'm even really—"
"You don't have to figure it out all at once," Julia interrupted. "But I want you to know that you don't have to hide. You deserve to be yourself, Olive. And you deserve to love who you love."
For the first time in a long while, Olive felt the weight in her chest lighten. She wasn't sure what her future held, or where her feelings for Kendall would go, but hearing Julia's words gave her a sense of freedom she had never allowed herself to feel.
"I'm here for you, okay?" Julia said, her hand still on Olive's shoulder, offering support without judgment. "And you can come to me whenever. We'll figure it out together."
Olive nodded, the tears threatening to fall. "Thank you," she whispered.
As they stood there, Julia's warmth surrounding her, Olive realized that maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to be perfect. She could be herself, and that was enough. For the first time in a long time, she wasn't just trying to fit into someone else's mold. She was starting to understand who she was—and that was more than enough.
And as for Kendall, Olive wasn't sure where they stood. But for the first time in a long time, she didn't feel like she had to figure everything out at once. She had time. And maybe that was the most important thing she needed. Time to understand herself.
