She spotted Addi across the room almost immediately. Her green eyes alight as she chatted with a group of ATOs. Olive scoffed to herself. Even after all the stress of AllSing, Addi somehow managed to look like she was walking out of a photoshoot.
Before Olive could retreat to the bar, Addi waved her over. "Olive! Over here!"
Olive hesitated, but it was too late. Addi was already weaving through the crowd toward her, smiling like they were best friends.
"You did so great tonight!" Addi said brightly. "Seriously, hosting that whole thing? You kept it together. I don't know if I could've handled that."
Olive forced a tight smile. "Thanks. It wasn't perfect, but we got through it."
"Stop. It was way better than people are giving you credit for. AllSing's always a circus." Addi leaned closer conspiratorially. "Between KD and Zeta's drama and half the fraternities not showing up, you basically saved the whole thing."
Olive's stomach twisted. As much as she wanted to dismiss Addi's praise, a small part of her craved the validation.
Before she could respond, two KA guys approached them with drinks in hand. "Hey, Olive," one of them said. It was Mark, a senior she vaguely recognized. "Just wanted to say thanks to AOII for pulling off AllSing. Y'all made it happen, and we appreciate it."
Olive nodded, grateful for the kind words. "Thanks, guys. I'll let the others know."
As the KA boys drifted back into the crowd, Addi grinned. "See? People notice when you do something great. Don't sell yourself short."
Olive looked at her, unsure how to respond. Addi's words felt genuine, but they also made Olive uncomfortable. Why was Addi always so kind to her, even when Olive had spent years resenting her?
Across the room, she saw a group of Zetas glaring at a cluster of KDs. The tension between the two sororities had been simmering for weeks, and AllSing had only made it worse. Someone must've said something because suddenly, a Zeta shouted, "At least we don't have to beg people to come to our events!"
A KD shot back, "Maybe if you focused on something other than posting thirst traps, you'd actually place for once!"
The argument grew louder, drawing attention from everyone around. Olive rolled her eyes and turned back to Addi, who was trying to suppress a laugh.
"It's like a reality show," Addi said. "They'll both end up on YikYak by morning."
"Let them," Olive muttered. "Maybe they'll leave us out of it for once."
As the night wore on, Olive found herself drifting through conversations, trying to avoid thinking about Kendall. The one silver lining of the evening was seeing ATO and KA guys mingling, laughing over beers like old friends.
"Maybe we did do something right," Olive thought as she sipped her drink.
But the warmth of the moment was fleeting. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and her heart sank as she saw Kendall's name on the screen. She hesitated, debating whether to answer. Instead, she shoved her phone back into her bag and turned to find Addi again. At least Addi's sincerity, however overwhelming, was easier to handle than Kendall's cutting words.
