The Song in the Egg

Harry let Ava and I borrow the Invisibility Cloak and the Marauder's Map that night.  However we didn't seem to need them, as the moonlit corridors were empty and silent, and by checking the Marauder's Map at strategic intervals, we were able to ensure that we wouldn't run into anyone we wanted to avoid.  When we reached the statue of Boris the Bewildered, a lost looking wizard with his gloves on the wrong hands, we located the right door, leaned close to it, and I muttered the password.

YN: Pine Fresh.

The door creaked open.  We slipped inside, locked the door behind us, and pulled off the Invisibility Cloak, looking around.  My immediate reaction was that it would be worth becoming a prefect just to be able to use this bathroom.  It was softly lit by a candle filled chandelier, and everything was made of white marble, including what looked like an empty, rectangular swimming pool sunk into the middle of the floor.  About a hundred golden taps stood all around the pool's edges, each with a differently colored jewel set into its handle.  There was also a diving board.  Long white linen curtains hung at the windows.  A large pile of fluffy white towels sat in a corner, and there was a single golden framed painting on the wall.  It featured a blonde mermaid who was fast asleep on a rock, her long hair over her face.  It fluttered every time she snored.

Ava: We have to become prefects.  We could come swimming here every day!

I laughed as I put two of the fluffy towels, the cloak, the map, and the egg at the side of the swimming pool sized bath, then knelt down and turned on a few of the taps.  I could tell at once that they carried different sorts of bubble bath mixed with the water.  One tap gushed pink and blue bubbles, each the size of a Quaffle.  Another poured ice white foam so thick that I thought it would have supported my weight if I'd cared to test it.  A third sent heavily perfumed purple clouds hovering over the surface of the water.  Then, when the deep pool was full of hot water, foam, and bubbles, which strangely took a very short time considering its size, Ava and I turned off all the taps, undressed to our underwear, and slid into the water.  It was so deep that Ava had to tread water.

YN: You're a bit short for the tub, Aves.

Ava: Shush.

Highly enjoyable though it was to swim with Ava in hot and foamy water with clouds of different-colored steam wafting all around us, I knew we had to figure out the egg.

YN: I have no clue what to-

The egg slipped out of my wet hands, falling into the water.  I sighed as Ava was struggling not to laugh.  I took a deep breath and went under.  To my surprise, I could hear a voice... singing?

Egg: Come seek us where our voices sound, we cannot sing above the ground, and while you're searching, ponder this, we've taken what you'll sorely miss, an hour long you'll have to look, and to recover what we took, but past an hour, the prospect's black, too late, it's gone, it won't come back.

I grabbed the egg.  It had opened, and the singing voice was clearly emanating from it.  I surfaced, and Ava was looking at me, confused.

Ava: I thought you were drowning.

YN: The egg.  It was singing.

Ava: What?

YN: That's why Cedric said to take a bath.  You can only hear it underwater.

I repeated the lines to Ava, who sat in silent thought for a moment, before she had a look of realization.

Ava: The lake!  What if, apart from the giant squid...

YN: Merpeople!

Ava: It makes sense, that lake is unimaginably deep, of course there'd be other creatures down there!

YN: So the merpeople will have something valuable to us, and we'll have an hour to retrieve it.

Ava: Well that should be easy for you!  Just use your Infinity and walk to the bottom of the lake.

YN: It doesn't work like that, Aves.  Even if I can stop the water, I'll run out of air... I'll need a charm... or I could become an Animagus...

Ava: You'd make a cute goldfish.

YN: Shush.

Ava giggled.

YN: The Bubble-Head charm!  That'll get me at least an hour.

Ava: You're a genius, babe.

I swam over and kissed her.  We floated there, making out for a few minutes, before she pulled away.

Ava: We should go.  A prefect or teacher could show up at any time.

YN: Yeah... this is nice though.

After a few more minutes, we climbed out of the tub, dried off, got dressed again, and slipped back under the cloak, hurrying out of the bathroom.  I backtracked and grabbed two of the extremely soft towels.  Ava gave me a questioning look.

YN: There was a whole pile, they won't miss two.  They're comfy.

We made it back to Gryffindor tower with no issues, and found Harry waiting for us in the common room.  We pulled off the Invisibility Cloak and Harry turned to us.

Harry: Did you figure it out?

YN: Yeah.  It's merpeople.  We'll have to retrieve something from the bottom of the lake.
