The start of the summer term would normally have meant that Harry was training hard for the last Quidditch match of the season. This year, however, it was the third and final task in the Triwizard Tournament for which he and I needed to prepare, but we still didn't know what we would have to do. Finally, in the last week of May, Professor McGonagall held us back in Transfiguration.
McGonagall: You are to go down to the Quidditch field tonight at nine o'clock. Mr Bagman will be there to tell the champions about the third task.
So at half past eight that night, Harry and I left Ava, Suguru, Ron, and Hermione in Gryffindor Tower and went downstairs. As we crossed the entrance hall, Cedric came up from the Hufflepuff common room.
Cedric: What d'you reckon it's going to be? Fleur keeps going on about underground tunnels, she reckons we've got to find treasure.
YN: That would be pretty fun.
Harry: Yeah, that wouldn't be too bad.
We walked down the dark lawn to the Quidditch stadium, turned through a gap in the stands, and walked out onto the field.
Cedric: What've they done to it?
The Quidditch field was no longer smooth and flat. It looked as though somebody had been building long, low walls all over it that twisted and crisscrossed in every direction.
YN: They're hedges!
Bagman: Hello there!
Ludo Bagman was standing in the middle of the field with Krum and Fleur. We made our way toward them, climbing over the hedges. Fleur beamed at me as we came nearer.
Bagman: Well, what d'you think? Growing nicely, aren't they? Give them a month and Hagrid'll have them twenty feet high. Don't worry, you'll have your Quidditch field back to normal once the task is over!
Harry and Cedric looked relieved.
Bagman: Now, I imagine you can guess what we're making here?
Krum: Maze.
Bagman: That's right! A maze. The third task's really very straightforward. The Triwizard Cup will be placed in the center of the maze. The first champion to touch it will receive full marks.
Fleur: We seemply 'ave to get through the maze?
Bagman: There will be obstacles. Hagrid and... a student, I believe his name was Suguru Geto? They will be providing a number of creatures.
I smirked. Suguru would be releasing Cursed Spirits into the maze.
Bagman: Then there will be spells that must be broken, all that sort of thing, you know. Now, the champion who is leading on points will get a head start into the maze. That'd be you, YN. Then Harry and Cedric. Then Mr Krum will enter. Then Miss Delacour. But you'll all be in with a fighting chance, depending how well you get past the obstacles. Should be fun, eh?
I knew only too well the kind of creatures that Hagrid was likely to provide for an event like this, and I figured Suguru wouldn't go easy on us either. So it was unlikely to be any fun at all. Harry looked to be thinking along the same lines, but we nodded politely like the other champions.
Bagman: Very well, if you haven't got any questions, we'll go back up to the castle, shall we, it's a bit chilly.
Bagman hurried alongside Harry as they began to wend their way out of the growing maze. I walked with Fleur.
YN: It'll be nice going back to a normal school year after this, won't it?
Fleur: Certainly. I must admit, ze tournament 'as not gone as well as i 'ad 'oped.
YN: You're doing great, Fleur. You just got unlucky with the second task.
She smiled at me.
Fleur: Ah, yes, I was 'oping to ask if you and your girlfriend would like to visit Gabrielle and I zis summer, in France. 'Er name is Ava, yes?
I grinned, nodding.
YN: That would be great! I'll definitely ask her.
Fleur smiled and gave me a hug, before hurrying towards the Beauxbatons carriage. I made my way up to the Gryffindor common room, where I found Ava and Suguru playing chess.
YN: Well, well, if it isn't Mr Geto, the newest member of Triwizard Tournament staff.
Suguru smirked.
Suguru: Ah, you heard about that?
Ava: Huh?
YN: They've planted a hedge maze on the Quidditch pitch. Suguru's gonna be releasing Cursed Spirits into the maze.
Suguru: Don't worry, I won't be releasing anything too strong, since only Cursed Energy can kill them. Mostly just stuff the others will have to run from, like Fly Heads. I'll make sure there are a few stronger ones gunning after you. Also that cursed teddy bear, that'll be going after Harry.
I snorted, sitting next to him.
YN: Also, Ava. Wanna go to France this summer? Fleur asked us to visit her and her sister.
Ava's face lit up.
Ava: That sounds awesome! I'm sure dad would have no problem with it.
The portrait hole opened about thirty minutes later, and Harry came in.
YN: Where've you been?
