The First Task

We were in the library reading about dragons, looking for something that could help Harry and I, when Hermione scowled.

Hermione: Oh no, he's back again, why can't he read on his stupid ship?

Viktor Krum slouched in, cast a surly look over at us, and settled himself in a distant corner with a pile of books.

Ava: Come on, we'll go back to the common room.  His fan club'll be here in a moment, twittering away...

And sure enough, as we left the library, a gang of girls tiptoed past us, one of them wearing a Bulgaria scarf tied around her waist.  The next morning, as we were leaving breakfast, I saw Cedric Diggory leaving the Hufflepuff table.  Cedric still didn't know about the dragons.  He'd be the only champion who didn't, if I was right in thinking that Maxime and Karkaroff would have told Fleur and Krum.  Harry was looking at them too.  He was probably thinking the same thing.

YN: We'll meet you guys at the greenhouses.

Harry: Yeah, go on.  We'll catch you up.

Suguru: You guys'll be late, the bell's about to ring-

YN: We'll catch up.

By the time we reached the bottom of the marble staircase, Cedric was at the top.  He was with a load of sixth year friends.  We followed Cedric at a distance and saw that he was heading toward the Charms corridor.  I nodded to Harry, who pulled out his wand and took careful aim.

Harry: Diffindo!

Cedric's bag split.  Parchment, quills, and books spilled out of it onto the floor.  Several bottles of ink smashed.  I stared at Harry.

YN: To be clear, that was a "lets talk to him before he gets to the classroom" look, not a "break all his shit" look.

Cedric: Don't bother.

He waved his friends off as they bent down to help him.

Cedric: Tell Flitwick I'm coming, go on.

We hurried up the corridor, which was now empty of everyone but himself and Cedric.

Cedric: Hi.  My bag just split, brand new and all-

YN: Cedric, we wanted to tell you what the first task was.

Cedric: What do you mean?

Harry: Dragons.

Harry spoke quickly, in case Professor Flitwick came out to see where Cedric had got to.

Harry: They've got five, one for each of us, and we've got to get past them.

Cedric stared at us.  I saw some of the panic Harry and I had been feeling since the night we saw the dragons replicated in his eyes.

Cedric: Are you sure?

YN: We've seen them.

Cedric: But how did you find out?  We're not supposed to know-

YN: It doesn't matter.  Fleur and Krum know too, now we all know.

I knew Hagrid would be in trouble if we told the truth.  Cedric straightened up, his arms full of inky quills, parchment, and books, his ripped bag dangling off one shoulder.  He stared at us, and there was a puzzled, almost suspicious look in his eyes.

Cedric: Why are you telling me?

YN: Because we don't want you to get killed.

Harry: And it's only fair, isn't it?  We all know now, we're on an even footing, aren't we?
