The smallgroup decided to go through the field of growing corn. Sifting through the tall stocks quickly, green leaves brushing against Cara's legs as she looked around for any bear traps or trip wire. Cara followed Heather who was behind Nat, Dodge walking behind the three girls. Their small flashlights were the only thing providing some light.
Their quick pace was abruptly stopped as they heard the sound of metal and the screech of an animal. A tiny bit of panic eliciting in her chest upon hearing her friend's words. "Stop!" Nat shouted as she heard the sound. Cara slightly jolted back into the boy behind her as she was caught off guard by the two sounds. Feeling this, Dodge's hand flew to her hip, helping to stabilize her. Cara hand met his almost instantly, resting on his wrist to find her footing once more.
The two stayed like that, looking over the other twos shoulders to see a small hare trapped in one of Spurlock's bear traps. Cara breath caught in her throat upon seeing the innocent rabbit. "Gross." she heard her friend say, Natalie agreeing with a soft "yeah." The two girls continuing to walk.
Cara knew she couldn't just leave the animal, even it the small thing was already dead. Quietly dropping down to the ground she looked to figure out how to open it. Though her eyebrows tightened as she realized she didn't know how to release the metal jaws. She let out a soft sigh knowing she couldn't help the creature.
As she was about to stand up to continue pushing through the field, she saw Dodge stoop down to help. Pushing the small buttons on either ends that sent the trap back down. Cara picked up the brown bunny moving it off of the trap, under some leaves.
Dodge stood reaching down to help Cara up as well, taking his hands she pulled herself up. Dusting off her hands on he denim of her shorts, the two jogged after Heather and Natalie as they had got pretty far.
As the four approached a point that had multiple different trails, Heather spoke up saying. "Okay, so which way now?" Cara looked around trying to see some indicator of Spurlock's house. "Um.. It'll be faster if we split up and scout. We should should see the greenhouses soon or we're too far west." Natalie said looking between the other three.
"Let's meet back at the next break in ten minutes?" Cara suggested, looking around for confirmation from the others. "Got it." "Yeah" the two girl's said, Natalie looked between the other girl's saying "Watch out." Earning two small responses of "Okay" and "We will." the blonde and brunette headed down two different paths. Seeing as though there was only one more path, Dodge and Cara entered it watching ahead of them for more traps.
Turning to Dodge, Cara spoke up "Thank you, for back there I mean" gesturing over her shoulder a little. "Don't worry about." Dodge shook his head, "I don't care if I got some disease from it but, that rabbit didn't deserve to die like that because of us." Cara felt bad for the animal. Glancing back up to Dodge for a moment seeing him nod with a soft frown.
The two continued walking through the plants, Cara pulled her phone out of her pocket as she remembered the two had taken picture of the map though as the two approached a large hole she shoved her phone back in her pocket knowing it could wait. The two slowly walked over albeit hesitantly not knowing what could be inside.
Instead of seeing another trap they say Drew sitting in the dug out dirt. "Little help?" He asked, knowing she'd not be much help here Cara patted Dodge on the shoulder saying "You got it princess." with a soft chuckle as she continued to walk around shining her flashlight around the creepy forest.
"Yeah, come on" she heard Dodge sigh reaching down to pull hit out of the pit. Drew mumbled a word of gratitude saying a quick "thanks" as Dodge walked back over to Cara. The two continued to walk along the tree line. The calm quietly atmosphere of the trees limbs swiping past each other and the chittering of crickets was cut off by a loud alarm.
The sound was followed by what sounded to be a gun shot. Spurlock seemed to be shouting something his words accompanied by gunshots though the pair couldn't seem to figure out what he'd been saying.
As the gunshots stopped Dodge quickly grabbed Cara's hand and they sped past the trees following the sound of the old man's recent shots.
The two ran. Catching sight of the house just as another bullets flew through the corn. The two slowed enough to not be seen or heard by the psycho. They saw that they were at the back of the house.
Shots rang loudly as the pair snuck up the side of the house hands still intertwined. Seeing a side door the two walked up to it Dodge turned the handle to see it was unlocked.
Dodge glanced back at Cara seeing slightly confused face. "He did all this but couldn't lock his door" she couldn't help but laugh quietly and the two walked up the steps into the house.
Closing the door behind them, Spurlocks words dying and his gunshots echoed through the night.
They snuck through the warmly lit house, feeling her phone buzz Cara grabbed it reading a text of caution from Nat. "Watch out, Spurlock in house." The words read, showing Dodge before slipping it back in her jeans pocket.
Hearing the man's pounding footsteps, Cara pulled the two into a small room as she listened for his foot to descend once more. The two stood facing each other, barely a couple inches apart. Cara's head was turned to listen better. The door was closed just enough that a small sliver of light could still be seen.
As Spurlock trudged back downstairs, the two waited a moment before pulling the door open and walking out of the small room. The walked into one room that seemed to be Spurlock's bedroom though they were greeted by Ray making Cara roll her eyes.
"All yours" Ray said ticking his head to the side slightly before walking past the two hitting Dodge's shoulder as he walked by. The two looked around the room seeing the messy bedroom that smelt of cigarette smoke.
Cara nose crinkled at the smell, seeing the walls that were littered with pictures of girls in just about no clothes. Cara plucked one off the wall, "Think he'll miss this one much?" She quietly asked Dodge holding up her trophy with a soft grin.
Dodge turned looking down at the photo his eyes widened upon seeing the brunette with nothing but an American flag draped over her back. "Classy" he said with a soft playful scoff, shaking his head lightly.
Taking another trinket for Dodge, the two made their way out of the room. Cara texted Nat and Heather "got our trophies, meet at car" before clicking it off shoving back into her pocket with the folded photo.
The two teens raced back to the car when they'd realized that Spurlock wouldn't be able to see them. Taking each other's hands once more simply so they wouldn't get lost.
They found Natalie as they ran, "hey" they quickly said. "Did you two see Heather leave the house?" Nat questioned. "No" Dodge said, "call her and ask where she is" Cara suggested and the three kept running.
"Heather" they heard Natalie say as she picked up the phone followed by a muffled response from the blonde. "We're almost at the car hurry" she said as the three found Dodge's car.
Cara pulled out her phone snapping a photo of her and her trophy. Flipping the camera around she snapped a picture of Dodge and his object. Turning to Nat she asked "where's your thing?" "Heather's bringing it" she said looking around for Heather.
Cara and Dodge hopped into his car, he started up his engine and the car purred alive. Seeing Heather yelling "I'm here im here" Natalie jumped in the car followed by the other girl. "Let's get the fuck out of here." Heather stated handing Natalie her object as the two snapped their pictures.
The car pulled out of the ditch and they quickly drove off.
