Rocks flew above their heads as a red energy beam cut through the rocks to their left. Scanlan screamed as they ran, ducking right behind a stone wall. The beam curved hitting the wall above them, narrowly blasting them.
"Why is the gateway so far!?" Pike heaved, trying to keep up.
"Because that would make things too easy for us, wouldn't it?" Athena sarcastically yelled back at Pike. She turned her head back to see Yenk was now running on all fours straight at them. "Oh give me a fucking break!"
"Oi! You think you can catch us, dingle-dick?" Grog taunted.
"Uh, maybe don't mock the murder-man." Scanlan suggested.
Well, it seemed Yenk didn't take too kindly to Grog's jest as a ball of energy formed by his horns before he blasted it straight at them.
"Everybody duck!" Vax shouted.
The ball of energy screamed toward them, a searing wave of heat and power. Everyone hit the ground in unison, the blast slamming into the stone wall behind them with an earth-shaking roar. Shards of molten rock rained down, glowing like embers in the oppressive, red-tinged air.
"Could've been worse!" Grog grinned, standing up and brushing off chunks of debris.
"Worse? Worse would be dead, Grog!" Scanlan yelped, scrambling to his feet. "Let's keep it that way!"
Athena grabbed Pike's arm, helping her up as the group bolted again. The streets of Dis twisted and turned unpredictably, as though designed to trap and confuse. Red light spilled from the cracked stone ground beneath them, and the air was thick with the smell of sulfur and ash.
"Keyleth!" Vax shouted, pointing to a narrow alley ahead. "Can you block it off behind us?!"
"I can try!" Keyleth yelled back, already weaving her hands through the air. Her magic rippled around her, pulling loose rubble and jagged stone from the walls with her wind. The debris clattered into the alleyway behind them, forming a crude barricade.
Athena cast another quick glance back, catching a glimpse of Yenk. The hulking demon snarled, his claws digging into the ground as he launched himself over the makeshift wall with a horrifying roar. Her heart sank.
"Well, that bought us a whole two seconds!" she shouted, gritting her teeth.
They tore down another street, this one lined with broken, hellish statues that seemed to leer as they passed. Yenk's heavy footfalls thundered behind them, shaking the ground and rattling the buildings around them.
"We need a plan!" Pike panted, her voice strained.
"The plan is run faster!" Vax snapped, grabbing Athena's hand to pull her forward as a chunk of stone crashed inches from where she'd been standing.
"No offense, but that plan sucks!" Scanlan shouted, narrowly dodging a clawed strike from Yenk that obliterated part of the street behind him.
Grog skidded to a stop near the corner of a ruined building, hefting his axe with a wild grin. "We could fight him!"
"We are not fighting him!" Keyleth shrieked, grabbing Grog's arm and dragging him forward with the rest of the group.
They continued to run until they finally reached the floating rocks at the beginning of their journey. For a moment, they skidded to a halt at the edge of a sheer drop before chained rocks.
"No turning back now!" Vax shouted, unfurling his wings in a burst of shadowy feathers. He leapt into the air, gliding effortlessly through the rocks. Keyleth transformed in a swirl of green energy, her eagle form taking shape. With a powerful beat of her wings, she soared ahead.
