Mitch's POV
I grabbed the fragile wooden bow and leather sheath off the table, walking to the front door and inhaling deeply as I took a step outside, admiring the way the trees dance in the wind.
I've always loved the wind.
I walked quickly towards the town hall in excitement, seeing as it was the designated 'meeting spot.'
Our town was small, with a population of 359. And each 2 weeks they send out a new group of male teens to hunt for meat; after they've gone to the mandatory classes for it anyways.
I'd always loved the outdoors and archery so this was something I'd always wanted to do. I was really excited and only slightly nervous.
I was assigned to go with four other boys, Preston, Robert, Vikram and Lachlan.
After the first class I'd managed to get a decent first impression of them all, Preston was rowdy, Robert was as respectful as they come, Lachlan was snarky and Vikram seemed overwhelmed with everything.
Robert and Preston were obviously friends already, wasn't to sure about Vikram and Lachlan though, but I seemed to get along with them fine in class.
We were a good group, I couldn't wait!
I excitedly walked down the dirt road towards the town square, picking up my pace as I'd noticed everyone was already, laughing and yelling at each other.
I'm not late, am I?
"Took you long enough." Preston scoffed in fake annoyance before bursting out laughing with a playful wink.
I chuckled at his childish demeanour, nodding at the rest of them in acknowledgement.
I waited as they grabbed there bags and equipment off the ground, laughing and bickering about who was going to bring back the most meat.
Robert cleared his threat dramatically, "Oohhkie dokie, everybody ready?" He questioned with a sly grin, dragging out the o's.
"You f*cking retard, did you really just say 'okie dokie?'" Preston laughed loudly, mouthing a 'what' as he shook his head in amusement.
"Um, shit off! I'll say whatever I damn want to!" Robert yelled hysterically with a laugh, resulting in us all laughing at his peculiar choice of words.
We eventually managed to calm down and talk about our plans for the day, where to go, who does what, and so on. All while cracking jokes and messing around.
Today would be fun.
(5 rabbits & 3 wild turkey later)
We walked through the forest silently, aside from the not-so-quiet fits of laughter that came from Preston every now and then.
We were far from the village now, seeing as we hadn't even heard any form of life on the outskirts of town. We figured the further went went the more animals we'd find. And we were right, we'd found a few rabbits lurking around and a pack of wild turkeys gobbling about.
It was going good so far.
I held my bow tightly in my palm, so far I hadn't caught anything, but neither had Preston so at least I wasn't the only one getting teased about 'being a pussy.'
Vikk and Preston carried thin metal swords while Lachlan and Rob held a bows like me.
Plus we all had our own iron daggers tucked away somewhere for cutting animals up if they were to big to carry. The forest suddenly went quiet, giving it an eerie vibe. The wind had vanished and birds stopped chirping, I scoffed at Preston as he whispered "oOooOOoo spooky," whilst waving his hands around dramatically.
He laughed with us in amusement, but suddenly stopped with wide eyes behind us.
"Hey guys hold up." Preston whispered urgently, a smirk plastered on his face.
He crept over to a bush and motioned for us to join him, we tip-toed over to him-most of us staying silent, Rob had decided to start singing the mission impossible song, making us all laugh.
Snap.
"Shhh!" Preston shushed over dramatically, smiling. "Mitch hurry up and get your fat ass over here!" He whispered with a giggle.
I stuck my tongue out at him and kneeled next to Rob and tried to see what everyone was looking at.
A deer, maybe 20 feet away was standing beside a tree. A pretty big deer if I might add.
"Nice find Preston! Here I got it." Rob said in a hushed tone as he grabbed an arrow from his sheath and placed it on his bow.
"Wow way to steal my thunder Rob." Preston mumbled as Rob raised the bow, took a second to aim then fired.
We all cheered and clapped as Rob hit the deer spot on, we all run over to it quickly in excitement.
We all gathered around it, Lachlan grabbing his dagger and beginning to cut into as we all cheered and whooped for Rob.
I laughed as Preston started arguing with rob playfully, turning towards Lachlan as he looked quit puzzled -and, scared?
I jogged over to him, kneeling beside him and staring down at the animal. It was fake.
Cotton filled the deer to the brim, it was stuffed. Wha-?"Um, guys?" I called out, the rest of them walking over to us in confusion.
"Wha- wait what the f*ck?!" Preston shouted as he saw Lachlan pull the cotton out.
We all started down at it silently, then at each other, all looking for an answer.
"So it's fake?" Preston questioned, laughing nervously.
Rob started pacing nervously back and fourth, scared. "What the hell is going on here?"
A loud rustling sound suddenly erupted from behind me, I turned around, only to be greeted by a man punching me square in the jaw.
I collapsed to the ground, landing on my side harshly. The man then quickly kicked me in the ribs forcefully, an unnerving crack resounding as he made contact. I cried out in pain, my breathing heavily and panicked as I attempted to get up.
"What the h-" I attempted to yell, but was cut off by his foot slamming into the side of my head, jerking me down again.
My vision grew blurry and I struggled to stay awake, gasping for air as my chest grew heavy.
The air felt thicker, and I felt a strange presence approaching, it was hot and dark. Bad.
"Bring them back to the base, you know the routine boys!" A man shouted threw grunts and yells of protest came from around him, his voice dark.
"Hello Mitchell."
