Opposing Sides

Daryl Pov

Getting home from the doctors, I carried  a sleeping Daniel into his room but Jody pulled me into the kitchen instead

"Huh?"

"He needs some medicine before he sleeps."

"Can't we just wait til he wakes up?"

"If we do that then he'll wake up in pain and it'll take longer for the medicine to work. You heard what the doctor said. 3 times a day. He had some at the doctors and he needs some now. Give him some more tonight."

"What time is it?" I asked, rubbing my eyes as Daniel snored against my shoulder

Jody checked her watch. "It's 2:45. Just wake him up."

I looked down at Daniel and slowly pulled him away from my body, making him run his tired eyes. He began to stir but I smiled at him, kissing his nose as he began to giggle. "Sorry to wake you up, buddy."

Jody stroked his cheek and I readjusted him in my arms so his head was sideways and his ear was pointing upwards. "Good boy. Stay still, baby," she told him gently as she sprayed some medicine in his ear. He tried to squirm as we did it but didn't cry thankfully

"I'm so tired," I sighed, closing my eyes whilst still holding Daniel

"I know. We just have to wait 20 minutes before we can move his head and then we can put him down and go to bed."

We sat in silence for a few minutes, both of us too tired to make conversation. So we just waited and waited. Eventually, within the silence, jody said, "You're a good daddy."

I smiled at her and responded, "you're a good mommy. He's lucky to have you Jody. We both are. But you ain't happy, and I wanna know why so I can fix it."

She just shook her head and shrugged it off but I persisted. "Please, babe. What's going on?"

"Nothing is going on."

"Well clearly something is wrong. I just need to know that you ain't thinking of leaving."

"What?"

"Jo, I'm sorry but I need to know. Okay? You ain't happy here and I want to know that you ain't gonna leave us."

She stood up angrily and asked in a quiet voice so not to wake Daniel, "you really think I'd leave my son?"

"Our son, jody. He's our son."

"I ain't gonna leave him and I ain't gonna leave you. I'm just tired is all. But I'm happy, okay?"

"Now you're just lying to me," I spat

"How long has it been?" She asked

"What?"

"How long has it been since he had his medicine?"

I checked my watch and replied, "25 minutes."

She pointed towards his room and said, "Go put him to bed because I will not raise my voice around our son."

I rolled my eyes but stood up with Daniel and took him to his room. I lay him down in his crib and made sure his stuffed bear was within reach

When I got back to jody, she was stood with her arms crossed angrily, leaning on one leg. "You seriously think I'd leave you both?"

"I don't know some days. You're upset all the time and you never explain why. Why am I supposed to think?"

"I don't know daryl!" She yelled, waving her hands in the air. "Maybe you could think, I've been through hell so yeah, I'm not dancing with joy right now. Because no, life ain't perfect. In fact, it's been shit for the pair of us. And you just gotta give me more time to deal with that."

I raised my hands in surrender. "I'll give you all the time you need. I don't expect you to be happy all the time. But you could atleast tell me what's bothering you."

"No I can't daryl."

"Why the hell not?" I shouted, slamming my hand down on the table, making a loud bang

Jody opened her mouth to speak but before she could, Daniel began crying. "Great. Now the babies awake."

"I'll get him," I said but she put her hand out to stop me

"No. I'll do it."

"You think I'd hurt him?"

"Oh my fucking god! Why are you jumping to these crazy conclusions? I'm not smiling so that means I'm leaving you. I want to spend time with my son so that means I think you're abusive. It seems you've jumped a few spaces there daryl."

Jody left to try and settle Daniel and I just went to our bedroom and got out of my clothes. I got into bed just when jody entered the room. In silence, she too got changed and climbed into bed

"We shouldn't go to bed angry," I told her

"Are you gonna apologise?"

"Are you gonna tell me what's bothering you?" I asked back

"Well, I guess we're going to bed angry. I've set an alarm for 5 o'clock by the way, assuming Daniel sleeps that long. Otherwise he'll be awake at midnight and we'll just be exhausted again."

I nodded my head and we both lay down, as far away from eachother as possible. I rubbed the tears from my eyes and sniffed them away. It was stupid to cry over one little fight. But we just didn't fight. It wasn't like that. It wasn't us. We always fight other people together. But never are we on opposing sides
