"When will I get to leave?"
Directed at no one but himself, to the only person who didn't actually know the answer. He needed to do something, to take action. But... he felt so broken, so helpless.
Of course he couldn't even mope in silence before Xavion walked in, no doubt to jeer at his disheveled state.
"My my... seems you've gotten Xara quite worked up."
He said it with a chuckle. Something Grian honestly had never heard before.
"For your punishment, I'll have to take something else away. Don't worry, I won't touch your wings. But... maybe that witty tongue of yours deserves to part with the rest of your head."
Xavion took a long pause, slowly unsheathing a large dagger from the air.
"Then again..."
Grian didn't dare to breathe.
"Eventually the pain will go away, you know what pain never goes away... loss. Your sister, she's moved out of the desert you know. I've seen her. She really is leading a wonderful life now; she took a portal to a new server. Very brave of her might I add. Everyone knows newly placed portals are quite dangerous. Good thing her and a few friends were willing to take the risk."
Grian's jaw clenched. He wouldn't let Xavion manipulate him.
"My sister's choices are none of your concern."
"Oh, the pain of loss. The most... Delicious of feelings. The only one I long to feed off of these days. Why do you think your sister's health dwindled after you left?"
"I don't know what your on about"
Grian very well did. He had watched his sister's health decline, he blamed it on the grief at the time, but it was very well possible that it could have been an emotional drain, caused... by a watcher.
A new kind of rage bubbled inside of Grian this time, it was white and hot, like a burning light fighting to shine through his skin.
"Oh, but you do. Your sister Pearl... she was quite the delicacy, wouldn't you say?"
Xavion savored the word, a chilling smile playing on his lips.
"But now she's come to terms with her... new existence. Quite content, she seems, with her mortal companions. No need to worry, though. She still speaks of you sometimes. A fond memory, a fleeting image... of her 'Pesky Bird'."
Grian wasn't ready for what Xavion was going to say next.
"Let's make those memories... more fleeting
"NO!"
Grian let the scream rip from his throat, his voice raw with fury. He knew exactly what Xavion intended. To erase Pearl's memory, to strip her of their shared past, to make her forget... that she ever had a brother.
"If anything you should be grateful! At least she won't look back upon you with dread. Now she can move on, and so can you! She is the only thing tying you back to your miserable life as a mortal. Now you really will have nothing but us.
Grian watched in horror as Xavion raised his hand, a dance of purple swirls appeared in his palm, like a projector the purple light formed some sort of hologram around them. The features were blurred but Grian could see crystal clear. It was Pearl. She was standing right there happily chatting to her friends.
"So serene, so peaceful. It would be a shame if she were to:"
Xavion snapped his fingers, and just like that before Grian could plead for any longer, he watched as the projection of Pearl fell to the ground. Grian observed as her friends gasped and rushed to her side.
"You monster!"
"If it weren't for you she would remain unharmed. But poor little pesky bird."
Xavion started to walk away, but Grian wasn't done. His rage was too plentiful and the scolding hot white light inside of him hadn't stopped burning
"I'll kill you!"
Grian immediately regretted those words.
"Oh? You'll... kill me? How unfortunate, this was supposed to improve your mood. Once you've given up on her you could have been let free and dwell in the void with us again. I suppose I should expect nothing but disappointment from you. I think another punishment is due."
Grian was such an idiot, he couldn't think of anyone else Xavion would go for next. Nobody but Pearl cared about him.
"Oh, who's this?"
Grian looked up to a new hologram. It was an elf boy sitting in a tree reading a book on wizardry.
"NO! DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH HIM!"
"Who? Scar?"
A quick 'Thank you so much' to the people who were patient. I'm already halfway through the school holidays and it's nearly been 4 months since I last published a chapter so thank you so much for waiting. I already have a solid plan for the next two chapters and they're very close to being written so just hang in there. <3
