When I woke up I was laying in a hospital bed. My mom was drinking a cup of coffee next to me. I had a bandage over my shoulder where the slash was. I looked at my mom.
“What did you tell them?” I asked, my voice solid.
“What did I tell who?” My mom replied. I gave her an ‘are you kidding me’ look.
“The doctors, mom!” I said.
“I said you tried to jump through a window and your shoulder caught a shard of glass.” She answered. I groaned.
“Way to make me look like a dumbass.”
“Well it’s either that or you filling out a police report for domestic violence, and blowing our cover. You pick.” My mom said, throwing my clothes at me. I got out of the bed, pulled the IVs out of my arm, pressed the cotton ball against my skin, and motioned for my mom to turn around. When she did, I took off the hospital gown and changed. The pain in my shoulder was gone. I could move freely.
“You ready to leave?”
“Don’t you have to fill out paperwork?”
“Already did.”
“Oh. Take me home.” I said, throwing the hospital gown on the bed.
“Your father came to pick up the car so we’re going to walk home.” She said as she pulled back the curtain that separated my area from the rest of the emergency ward. I nodded.
We started to walk through all the patients. Some were coughing, others were bleeding. I tried not to look at them. I turned and looked over my shoulder. There was a man following us. I quickly turned away as we exited the doors of the hospital. When we were out in the open, I looked behind us again. The man was still behind us. He had dark circles under his eyes and he had a green band tied around his upper arm. I stared to panic. Green is the illit’s color, but my arm wasn’t burning with the presence of an illit. I turned away and looked at where we were walking. We weren’t even half way home yet.
My mom screamed. I jumped, turned, and looked at her. The man who was following us was standing behind her holding a bloody knife. The same knife that sliced me. I wanted to turn and run but you’re not supposed to abandon your kin.
My mom looked at me. “Go. Run. Be silent, stealthy Kill everything- AHHH!” She started to recite the battle hymn, but she was stabbed in the back again.
I didn’t run. I didn’t listen to the words of my people. I tried to push the man away from my mother. He didn’t even budge. I’m so weak without my sentinel strength. The man smacked me across the face. I fell backwards and wiped my bleeding nose.
“Natalie- run.” My mom said to me. One thing we’re taught is to honor the last request of the dying. My mom looked at me with pleading eyes as the man stabbed her again.
I ran, looking over my shoulder as I went. I felt like I was betraying her. I wiped the mixture of blood and tears off of my face. My legs were burning and my chest hurt from sobbing. People on the street looked at me like I was crazy. I didn’t stop running. I ran through traffic as car horns blared and people slammed on their brakes. I finally made it up to my driveway and when I made it up the steps I tried to open the door but it was locked.
