This is only the beginning

“Let’s go.” My father snapped, and then slammed the front door. It’s been three days since my mother died. Emma’s awake. She stays in my room.

Today is the day that I’m supposed to go to the government building and get my full powers. My brothers and father are going to my grandparents. They are going to be gone all day and all of tomorrow.

There are rumors floating around that there is going to be an attack on downtown Cleveland tomorrow. My family will be back by then.

Nate told me that my father was talking about me while they were training.  He said my father regrets having a daughter. He said all I do is bring pain upon this family. Honestly, the old hag makes no sense to me. All he’s making me want to do is rebel and get back at my father. I will do anything that I get the chance to.

I changed into my shoes and went to the front door. I waited until the car pulled away and was no longer in sight before I walked out the door.

The air was warm against my hot skin. The sun was shining through a thin layer of clouds. There was barely a breeze. My hair was in a tight pony-tail on the back of my head. As I walked, it swished from side to side. My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see my screen lit with a text message from Nate.

Go. Run. Be silent, stealthy. Kill everything that does not wear sentinel colors. I love you with all that I am. Good Luck.” It read. I laughed, locking the phone screen and shoving it back into my pocket.

There was barely any traffic so I didn’t wait for the little white walking man to appear on the signal-box-thingy. I crossed the street and walked down a small hill to the door of the government building. There was a blonde secretary at the front desk.

“Name, age, and reason for appearance.” She said, not looking up from something on her desk.

“Natalie Nottmeier. 17 years old. I’m here to get my full strength granted to me.” I said, matching her snippy tone. She looked at me with bright hazel eyes.

“You’re Natalie?”

“Did I stutter?” I asked, looking around to see if she could have been addressing someone else. I was the only visitor there. She shook her head rapidly.

“Richard, take Miss Nottmeier to the training center, please.” She said, talking to someone who I couldn’t see. A tall, dark-skinned man came from around the corner.

“Come with me, please, miss.” He said. I followed.

“Training center? I’m not here to train.” I said, slightly dumbfounded.

“We need to test your ability. Nothing too major.” He said, brushing it off. We entered an elevator, where an awkward silence was filled by awkward elevator music. The door opened and I was standing in front of a giant glass wall. Behind the wall was a mock city. There were buildings and streets. I was confused. I looked up to the ceiling to see how it could possibly fit under ground.

“How?” I asked to the ceiling. Richard laughed.

“The floors above this are hollow in that corner. It’s like a little pocket of fake city.” He said.

“Oh?” I said to which he laughed again. He led me over to a bunch of official looking men. They turned and looked at me.

“Ah, hello, Natalie. I heard about your situation. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.” One man said. I didn’t answer. “All you’re going to have to do is pick a weapon and go into the mock city and beat the shit out of a few things before we can see if you have good judgment.”
