It's still so early. The sun has probably just risen, but Lala already woke me up to tell me the King invited me to the palace.
Mama packed me some bread since the palace is quite far from the Andersons. She also gave me a wrapped box, saying it was a gift for the King. I just nodded at her.
After about an hour, we arrived safely at the palace. A palace maid quietly escorted us to the drawing room where the King was supposedly waiting for me.
What does he want this time?
My already half-asleep brain got even more confused because of his lazy letter. All it said was, "Let's meet, and no is not an option." Then his name and stamp at the bottom.
Like, barkada ba kami?
The double doors to the drawing room opened, and the maid motioned for me to enter. As I stepped in, I was greeted by a tall man with a commanding presence. The King himself stood in the middle of the room, a chessboard already set up on a grand oak table.
I bowed slightly and greeted him, “Greetings to the sun that rises and to the moon that shines at night, Your Majesty, The King.”
He nodded and gave a small smile. “Rise. Sit down, Lady Naseria."
The King gestured for me to sit, so I walked over to the chair across from him. He looked calm and collected as always, but I couldn't help feeling suspicious.
What could he want this time?
“Your Majesty, to what do I owe this... early morning invitation?” I asked, keeping my tone polite but unable to hide the slight annoyance in my voice.
The King chuckled softly, his golden eyes glinting with amusement. “Straight to the point, as usual. I like that about you, Lady Naseria,” he said.
I raised an eyebrow. “I’ll take that as a compliment, Your Majesty. But why am I here?”
He leaned back in his chair, clasping his hands together. “Your father mentioned something interesting during our last conversation. He told me you’re an exceptional chess player.”
I blinked at him. Chess? Ayon lang? He called me all the way here for chess? Pinagloloko ba ako ng matandang 'to?
I tilted my head. I am suddenly more awake now. “You woke me up early just to play chess, Your Majesty?”
His grin widened. “Of course. Your father boasted about your talent, and I wish to see it for myself.”
Ah, Papa.
“Very well,” I said, sitting down. “If that’s what Your Majesty wants, then who am I to refuse? But don’t expect me to go easy on you, Your Majesty.”
