Let's begin,
CHAHAT VOHRA
(Two months later)As I pulled the brakes of the car outside the Vohra mansion, Aarohi turned to me with a stern expression. "Bhabhi dekho, I am warning you for the last time, ab agar aap uss ghar mein gaye to main bhai ko bata dungi...."
(Sister-in-law, listen, I'm warning you for the last time, if you go to that house again, I'll tell my brother....)
I let out a sigh, feeling a bit exasperated. We'd been discussing this for over an hour now. "Okay fine, nahi jaungi. Ab hum andar chale?"
(Okay fine, I won't go. Shall we go inside now?)
But Aarohi wasn't letting up. "Nahi, first promise me you won't go there." She extended her hand, demanding a promise.
I hesitated, feeling torn. I didn't know why, but I couldn't stop myself from helping tau ji when he came to me. Maybe it was because he was my father's brother, and I felt a sense of loyalty towards him. "Aaru, but how? Here, I am buying land for opening an old age home, and on the other hand, how can I deny help to someone in need?" I asked, trying to reason with her.
Aarohi's expression turned dramatic. "Old age home is for needy people bhabhi...aise logo ke liye nahi...balki aise logo se dharti pe rehne ka kiraya lena chahiye..."
(An old age home is for needy people, sister-in-law...not for people like them...instead, we should be charging them rent for living on this earth...)
I rolled my eyes, chuckling despite myself. Only Aarohi could manage to be funny in the midst of a serious conversation. "Aaruu---" I started to say, but she cut me off.
"Aaru-vaaru nothing bhabhi, dekho achhai ke raste pe chalo par dekh to lo kahi kisi ne bich raste mein nimbu mirchi na rakh dia ho..."
(No Aaru-vaaru, sister-in-law, just follow the path of goodness, but make sure no one has placed a lemon and chili in the middle of the path...)
I laughed, shaking my head. "Acha thik hai meri maa, ab gaadi se to niche utar..."
(Okay, fine, my mother, now get down from the car...)
Aarohi grinned, gathering the shopping bags. "Haa haa jaa rhi hu, pata hai mujhe apko bhai se baat krni hai...bata du unko kaha the aap aaj?"
(I'm going, I know I have to talk to my brother about you...should I tell him where you were today?)
