Wangji's breath remained steady, but within him, something raw and unsettled remained. The beast had never obeyed so easily before. It had never obeyed at all.

Erebus watched, waiting.

"Let me ask you again,"  Erebus, the gatekeeper murmured. "Is this the only path left?"

The words echoed, deliberate and slow, sinking into Wangji's mind like ink bleeding into parchment.

You have failed.

He had defied time, unraveled fate with his own hands. But at what cost?

He had reclaimed what was his—his son, his family. Yet the scales had not balanced. The beast had stirred, its chains weakened. Erebus had proven how easily it could be called.

Could he still claim control?

If it had obeyed so easily—who did it truly belong to?

A presence at his side. Wei Ying.

Wangji felt him before he spoke, the sharp press of his gaze cutting through the fog of his thoughts.

"Lan Zhan."

Wangji did not move.

"You're thinking too much." A dry laugh, edged with understanding rather than amusement.

Wangji exhaled slowly, but the tightness in his chest refused to release. He should have felt relief that the beast had retreated, that Erebus had demanded no more. Yet, Wei Ying's quiet presence, warm and unwavering, only deepened the fracture in his thoughts.

Wei Ying stepped closer, his fingers brushing lightly over Wangji's wrist before falling away. He did not push for answers, did not demand explanations. He simply stood there, patient, waiting.

Wangji closed his eyes. "It should not have obeyed."

"And yet, it did."

"That is the problem."

Wei Ying studied him in the dim light, his face unreadable. "You think it means something worse? That it wasn't fear or respect that made it listen, but something else?"

Wangji didn't answer. He didn't need to.

Erebus remained motionless, his gaze heavy like the weight of night itself. "The path you've chosen wavers. The beast yields, but only because it knows you are already bound to it."

The word settled over Wangji like a bitter taste—bound. Had he traded one chain for another? Had his defiance led him into a different kind of servitude?

Wei Ying exhaled, arms crossed. "You always think control leads to corruption. Maybe this time, it means understanding."

Wangji hesitated. His mind had fought against this inevitable moment for so long, but Wei Ying's words struck deeper than fear or reason.

He turned, meeting Wei Ying's gaze, and for the first time since the beast had retreated, the storm within him stilled—if only for a moment.

Erebus sighed, a sound like stone shifting. "Decide soon, Wangji. The chains will not hold forever."

In the silence that followed, the shadows at the edge of the world stirred.

Wangji straightened, tightening his grip around Bichen's hilt. Hesitation had become a luxury he could no longer afford. Fate pressed heavily against his shoulders, but the choice was already made.

"I will face Odin," he said, his voice steady and resolute. "No more running. No more chains."

Erebus's words dripped with disdain. "And you think you will succeed in taking his life to replace the one you've saved from death?"
