Wangji cast a final glance at the mirror. The Lan tailor had woven tradition into modernity with quiet mastery, crafting a white suit that seamlessly blended heritage with human fashion. His gaze lingered on the Cloud Recesses emblem—a symbol of his lineage, his duty, the weight of generations. Adjusting his forehead ribbon and securing his hair ornament, he exhaled slowly, feeling the quiet warmth of familiarity settle within him, grounding him in who he was.
In the reflection, Sizhui stood beside him, poised yet brimming with anticipation. His white turtleneck bore the same emblem, a subtle echo of tradition, paired with casual blue jeans—a bridge between past and present. His head ribbon and hair ornament remained untouched, silent affirmations of his heritage. Wangji studied him for a moment, a sense of quiet pride welling within him. He had grown, balanced between two worlds yet never straying from his roots.
A flicker of something softened Wangji's gaze. "Let's go."
They stepped out of the Jingshi, their movements unhurried as they passed through the serene corridors of the Cloud Recesses. The crisp mountain air carried the faint scent of sandalwood and ink, mingling with the quiet hum of a distant qin. The tranquility of the sect was as unchanged as ever, but something within Wangji felt different.
At the main courtyard, Lan Xichen awaited them. The sight of his brother after three years sent an unexpected pang through Wangji's chest. He had hoped to leave without unnecessary encounters, but now, standing before him, nostalgia and quiet joy unfurled in his chest. Time had passed, but his brother's presence remained an anchor, steady and unwavering.
"Brother," Wangji greeted, his voice warm.
Lan Xichen returned the nod, a gentle smile gracing his lips. "Wangji. Sizhui. It has been too long." His gaze softened as he studied them. "How have you been?"
"I am well," Wangji replied, his gaze flicking briefly to Sizhui. "He has grown under your care. And the Lan Sect?"
"It thrives," Lan Xichen assured him, though his eyes searched Wangji's face for something unspoken. "But enough of that. Your return was unexpected." He hesitated before continuing, his voice gentler. "Have you found Wei Ying?"
The question settled between them like a quiet storm. Wangji hesitated, then answered simply, "I have come to gather provisions and prepare Sizhui for a long journey. I know where Wei Ying is."
Lan Xichen's expression remained calm, but something flickered in his gaze—understanding, perhaps, or an old ache resurfacing. "Ah." His eyes lingered on Wangji's attire. "The human realm... His absence weighs on us all. But is it wise to take Sizhui with you?"
"Shūshu, I wish to go with Hanguang-jun," Sizhui said firmly before Wangji could speak.
Wangji's expression did not waver. "I cannot leave him behind any longer. I had no choice at his age, I will not deny him that choice now." He paused, something softer threading through his voice. "And my focus wavers when we are apart. I would rather have him by my side."
Lan Xichen studied him for a long moment before finally nodding. "I understand." A faint smile touched his lips, though his eyes held something else—perhaps a quiet sorrow, or an unspoken wish. "Take care on your journey—and bring Wei Ying home."
As Lan Xichen disappeared into the distance, Wangji turned, leading Sizhui toward the grand entrance. Their steps were measured, heavy with unspoken thoughts. The Cloud Recesses had been their sanctuary for years, but now it felt like a place they were leaving behind rather than returning to.
At the threshold, Wangji activated a talisman. A golden door materialized before them, its intricate design shimmering with an ethereal glow. The air crackled with energy as the portal loomed, an open invitation to the unknown. With a resolute nod, Wangji stepped through. Sizhui took a deep breath and followed.
