The plan was in motion. The moon hung low behind a veil of thick clouds, casting Odin's fortress in an oppressive shroud of darkness. The air was tense as Wangji slipped soundlessly through the stronghold's winding corridors. Around his neck hung Wen Qing's artifact, a small charm pulsing faintly with light. Its enchantment cloaked him in obscurity, shielding him from the watchful eyes of guards and the intricate traps laced into the walls. Every second counted—Wen Qing's spiritual energy fueled the artifact, and he knew the strain would be immense.
Wangji moved with the precision of a blade, his robes whispering against the cold stone as he navigated the labyrinthine passages. Each measured step brought him closer to the prison where Wei Ying and Wen Ning were confined. The weight of Bichen, securely strapped to his back, was a constant reassurance—silent, deadly, and steadfast.
The objective was clear: infiltrating unseen, freeing Wei Ying and Wen Ning, and retreating to safety. Afterward, he would return to face Odin. Hidden within his robes were vials of spiritual energy replenisher, their sharp contents ready to revive the boys should the need arise.
The fortress was as complex as Wen Qing had described, a maze designed to disorient intruders. Yet, her intelligence had been precise. Wangji slipped past a pair of patrolling guards, their armor glinting faintly in the dim torchlight. He pressed himself into the shadows, holding his breath as they passed, oblivious to his presence.
The artifact around his neck pulsed again, a subtle but insistent reminder of its limitations. Wen Qing's voice echoed in his mind, firm and measured: "The charm will shield you, but it has its limits. Conserve your strength. Save it for when it truly matters."
His hands tightened into fists. I will not fail this mission. I must not he thought
At last, the prison loomed before him. A massive iron door, bound in runes that shimmered faintly in the gloom, marked its entrance. The air here was oppressive, heavy with a malevolent energy that seemed to seep into his skin. The faint glow of braziers cast flickering shadows across the stone floor. Wangji's heart clenched as a muffled groan reached his ears, faint but unmistakable.
Wei Ying.
He approached with painstaking care, his fingers brushing against the cold surface of the door. He could feel the vibrations of power in the runes, a silent warning to any who dared disturb the prison. His breath steadied, his focus sharpening.
But before he could act, a voice—sharp and cruel—pierced the silence.
"You think you can keep this up?" Odin's tone was laced with mockery, each word deliberate and cutting. "Even now, you cling to defiance as if it has any value. Foolish boy. Didn't I warn you to vanish when you had the chance?"
Wangji froze, his pulse thundering in his ears. Pressing closer to the narrow gap in the door, he peered inside, his heart sinking at the sight before him.
Wei Ying knelt on the cold stone floor, his arms suspended above his head by glowing chains of golden energy. His head hung low, hair matted with blood and sweat, while shallow, labored breaths wracked his battered frame. Bruises and fresh cuts marred his skin, and crimson droplets formed a steady rhythm as they fell to the ground.
Odin towered over him, his presence suffused with cold triumph. Gungnir's faint glow illuminated the cell, the spear's tip still trailing wisps of smoke from its last strike.
"Still holding on, are you?" Odin mused, his tone almost conversational. He crouched slightly, meeting Wei Ying's gaze with a smirk. "Clinging to scraps of rebellion like they'll save you. But it's pointless. Everyone breaks eventually."
