Weeks had passed since Wen Qing's visit, but the unease that lingered in Wangji's chest had only grown. It was like a thick fog that never lifted, clouding his thoughts and warping his sense of reality. He couldn't shake the feeling that eyes—Odin's eyes—were always on him, watching from the shadows, slipping just beyond the edges of his awareness. His instincts, honed from years of discipline, were on high alert, yet the source of his anxiety remained maddeningly elusive.

Wangji stood by the window, gazing out over the quiet village below. The moon cast a silver light on the rooftops, but the familiar sights no longer comforted him. Instead, everything seemed distorted, like he was peering through warped glass. He felt trapped, like a caged animal sensing danger just out of reach. And worst of all, the unease had seeped into his trust—trust in Wei Ying, the man he loved more than anything. He couldn't shake the thought that Wei Ying was hiding something, keeping secrets buried too deep for even Wangji to reach. He was convinced that Wei Ying knew more than he let on, and it gnawed at him, night and day.

His mind flashed back to the night before—a memory that sat heavy in his chest, guilt and determination twisting inside him. He couldn't believe how far he had gone: slipping a dose of sleeping pills into Wei Ying's tea. Just enough to ensure a deep slumber, enough to keep him from waking while Wangji carried out what he believed needed to be done.

Wangji remembered lying in bed, holding his breath, feigning sleep as he listened to Wei Ying's breathing slow and deepen beside him. Only when he was sure that Wei Ying wouldn't wake did he slip out from beneath the covers, moving silently through the darkened halls to the living room where Sizhui and Jingyi waited.

Wangji's voice had been barely more than a whisper, but the weight in his words was unmistakable. "Boys, I have an important task to give you."

Sizhui sat up straighter, worry etching his features. "Dad? What happened?"

Wangji paused, glancing back toward the hallway as if he expected Wei Ying to appear at any moment. He took a steadying breath, meeting Sizhui's eyes. "Listen carefully. I don't want Wei Ying to know we've had this conversation—at least, not yet. I need the two of you to watch him, but be subtle. He cannot know he is being watched."

Jingyi's brow furrowed, curiosity sparking in his gaze. But it was Sizhui who spoke first, confusion lacing his voice. "But Dad, why would you want us to spy on him? Did Wei Ying... do something?"

"No," Wangji replied, too quickly, the denial sounding hollow even to his own ears. "He hasn't done anything wrong. But... Wei Ying keeps things to himself sometimes, especially when he thinks the truth might hurt those he cares about. I need to know if he's keeping anything from us—anything that could be dangerous."

Sizhui's face softened, concern mingling with doubt. "Dad... Wei Ying would never want to put us in danger. He's always protected us."

Wangji's expression tightened, shadows flickering in his eyes. "I know he would never mean to. But that doesn't mean he's telling us everything. Please, Sizhui, Jingyi... this is important. Can I count on you?"

Jingyi nodded quickly, his usual energy tempered by the seriousness of the moment. "We'll be careful, Hanguang Jun. Discreet. He won't even notice we're watching."

Sizhui's agreement came more slowly, a troubled frown pulling at his lips. He glanced toward the darkened hallway, where the faint sound of Wei Ying's steady breathing reached their ears. "I'll do it, Dad. But I don't like hiding things from him."

Wangji forced a small, tight smile, placing a hand on Sizhui's shoulder. "Neither do I," he admitted quietly, feeling the weight of his own words settle like a stone in his chest. "But sometimes... sometimes protecting those we love means doing things we don't want to do."
