Xuanyu watched him—his expression unreadable—but the edge in his gaze had dulled. Beneath it, something softer stirred. Something tired.

"I had no choice, Lan Zhan," he said at last, voice low and steady. "You think I wanted this? To become something fought at every turn, trapped in shadows?" A quiet, bitter laugh escaped him. "No. I wanted peace. I wanted what I had before—a bond, a purpose. But you gave me nothing but chains."

Wangji lowered his eyes, unable to deny it.

Every lesson drilled into him had warned of Xuanyu's power. Suppress it. Control it. Never trust the voice within. And he had obeyed—without question—never once seeing it as anything but a threat.

"I thought I was protecting myself," he said, quieter than he meant to.

Xuanyu tilted his head, studying him. "And yet, every time you lost control, you turned to me."

Wangji's breath caught.

Xuanyu stepped closer, the distance between them vanishing. Up close, his green eyes shimmered with something ancient, something wounded.

"When you were drowning in despair, when grief left you hollow, I was there," he murmured. "When you needed strength, I gave it. When your enemies sought to break you, I held you together. Even when you cursed me, buried me deep inside, I stayed."

Wangji's fingers twitched. Part of him wanted to retreat—to reach for the silence of habit. But another part, long-buried, listened.

He exhaled, unsteady. "Then why were you always so... violent?"

Xuanyu's lips lifted—not in a smirk, but something more fragile. Almost mournful.

"Because that was the only language you would hear."

The words struck deep.

Wangji's chest tightened.

How many times had he blamed Xuanyu for the destruction that followed his loss of control? How often had he feared the rage, cursed the chaos—never once questioning whether it was his own silence, his rejection, that had shaped the beast?

Xuanyu turned, gaze drifting across the fractured landscape of Wangji's mind—the broken Cloud Recesses, the warped echoes of memory, the ghosts of a past neither of them could change.

"I tried to reach you in other ways," he said quietly. "I tried to guide you. To warn you. But you wouldn't hear me. You hated me. So I became something you couldn't ignore."

Wangji swallowed hard, his throat closing around a response that would not come.

I never knew. I never let myself know.

Xuanyu sighed, shaking his head. "You're not a cruel person, Lan Zhan. But you are a stubborn one. I had to be cruel... so you would finally see me."

Wangji hesitated, then asked the question that had haunted him from the moment the conversation began.

"What do you want?"

Xuanyu looked at him—really looked at him—searching for something in his face. He said nothing for a long time.

Then, softly, "I want to exist."

The honesty in those words hit like a blow to the chest.

"I don't want to be a whisper at the back of your mind. A shadow locked in a cage," Xuanyu continued. "I don't want to be your enemy, Lan Zhan. I want to be your ally."

Wangji could feel his heartbeat echoing in his ears.

Could he do that? Could he accept Xuanyu—after everything?
