Read before reading: There will be two updates today, this one, the epilogue, and another at midnight (France time). I had planned on ending 2025 with Wangji and Wei Wuxian, but I also wanted to start 2026 with them. I hope you enjoy it. 💖💖💖💖

The morning light fell across the training yard in soft bands, gold and white. Mist drifted along the mountain edge, catching the faint shimmer of spiritual energy that pulsed and faltered in the air.
Sizhui stood at the center of the courtyard, his breathing uneven. Around him, golden threads flickered, fragile wings half-born, trembling, scattering before they could form.
Again. He tried again. His fingers moved, precise and practiced, but the light broke apart like sand.
"Steady," Wangji said, his voice quiet but firm. "Do not force them."
"I'm not," Sizhui bit out, his jaw tight. Sweat clung to his brow. He drew another seal, perfect in form, but the energy twisted. The butterflies flickered, then vanished entirely.
The silence afterward felt heavy.
Wei Ying sat nearby on the veranda steps, watching carefully. He started to speak, stopped when he saw the look on Sizhui's face.
"I can't.." Sizhui's voice cracked. "I can't keep them from slipping away. They're supposed to listen, to trust me, but they scatter the moment I reach for them."
"They are not servants," Wangji reminded softly. "They follow your calm, not your command."
Sizhui turned sharply. "I am calm."
The words were too sharp, too defensive, and the next breath that left him came in a shudder. "I've been trying for months. You made it look so easy. You..." He swallowed hard, unable to continue.
Wangji's expression didn't change, but something gentle softened behind his eyes. "It was not easy. You simply did not see the failures."
"I don't want to fail," Sizhui whispered, looking down. "If I can't do this... how will I take your place? What if I can't keep people safe when they sleep? What if I..." His voice wavered. "What if I disappoint you?"
Wei Ying was already on his feet before Wangji could move. He crossed the courtyard in a few long strides and stopped in front of their son.
"Hey." His tone was low but unyielding. "Look at me."
Sizhui hesitated, then did.
"You don't have to be your father," Wei Ying said, each word steady, certain. "You're you. And you're allowed to struggle. Lan Zhan didn't wake up one morning and know how to weave dreams. He worked. He failed. A lot."
From behind him, Wangji added quietly, "Wei Ying is correct."
Wei Ying shot him a look. "Of course I am. I've been saying that for years." Then, turning back to Sizhui: "The only thing that'll disappoint us is if you stop trying. The butterflies aren't scared of you, they're waiting for you to stop being scared of yourself."
Sizhui's breath trembled. He blinked rapidly, fighting the sting behind his eyes. "I'm not scared," he said, then, smaller, "I just don't want to let anyone down."
Wangji stepped closer, his hand resting lightly on Sizhui's shoulder. His touch was steady, grounding. "You have not let anyone down. You honor what came before simply by choosing to learn."
For a heartbeat, no one spoke. The morning breeze shifted, carrying the faint scent of pine and incense.
Wei Ying glanced between them, then gently reached for Sizhui's wrist. "That's enough for today. Rest before you break your focus,or the butterflies will start avoiding you altogether."
