Darkness.
At first, that was all there was. A vast, empty void stretching endlessly in every direction. No ground beneath his feet. No air to breathe. Only silence-thick, suffocating-pressing in from all sides.
Wangji didn't know where he was.
Had he died?
Had Xuanyu finally taken over?
His last memory was fire-heat blistering through him, the weight of his body giving way, and Wei Ying's voice calling his name. Then-
Nothing.
He tried to take a step. But there was no ground, no sense of movement. And yet, the world shifted. Shapes flickered like ink swirling in water, indistinct and fluid.
A place began to form.
AAt first, he thought it was the Cloud Recesses. Tall, pristine halls. The endless sky overhead. But something was wrong. The air was too still. The shadows stretched too long. The steps were cracked. Lanterns hung unlit, swaying in an invisible breeze.
And then he saw him.
Xuanyu stood in the center.
Not as a monster. Not the thing that had clawed into his skin and stolen his voice. He looked like a man-tall, refined, with sharp features and long, dark hair that fell past his shoulders. His eyes-green, brilliant, clear as jade-watched him with something calm. Something knowing.
No smirk. No wild grin. Just stillness.
"You're finally here," Xuanyu said. His voice was steady, unhurried.
Wangji tensed. "Where is this?"
Xuanyu tilted his head. "Would it make you feel better if I said it was a dream?"
A dream. A nightmare. A prison.
It could be all of those. Wangji didn't know. He didn't trust it.
Xuanyu gave a low hum and stepped forward. The world pulsed with his movement.
"You shouldn't fight so hard," he said. "You're only making this harder on yourself."
"I want my body back."
"You already have it," Xuanyu replied, calm as a mirror. "You just don't realize it yet."
Wangji curled his hands into fists. "Why am I here?"
Xuanyu sighed, as if the question bored him. "Because you're not ready. You think control is enough-but you've never understood what that actually means."
"Then explain it."
Xuanyu studied him. Then the dream shifted.
The broken stone smoothed. Lanterns flickered to life. The air stirred with the sound of distant bamboo.
For the first time since arriving, Wangji didn't feel trapped.
Just... still.
Xuanyu looked away, his voice lower now. "I wasn't always like this, you know."
Wangji watched him. "Then what were you?"
Xuanyu gave a faint laugh. "I was like you."
A lie, Wangji thought-immediately.
But... was it?
He had spent so long pushing the voice away. Rejecting the surges of power when his control slipped. He had never questioned where it came from. Only that it was other.
But what if it wasn't?
Xuanyu turned back to him, and for the first time, there was no malice in his gaze. No mockery.
