I woke up, and checked the phone in my pocket. It was an iPhone, and it read three pm. I realized I was hungry, so I grabbed a packet of cheez-its from the backpack.

Vanessa came in, and I handed her one. We ate quietly, until there was a knock on the door. I got up, and answered it, Vanessa trailing slowly behind.

It was Shawn, our next door neighbor.

"Hey Addy," he greeted.

I smiled at him, thankful to have met someone genuinely nice. I barely knew him though, and I just escaped a mental hospital. Why would I want him in my messed up life when he could find out? He would hate me.

"Hey."

He stretched his arm to the doorframe, and listened carefully. "I was wondered if you wanted to hang out today," he said, "since you're probably new around here."

"Yeah, we moved from New York."

Lie.

"So, do you and Alana want to hang?"

"Sure," I answered.

He grinned dorkishly, and I admitted to myself he had a nice smile. Then we just stood there, staring at each other, with grins on our faces.

"Well, we must go get ready, then," Vanessa broke the silence.

Shawn leaned off the doorframe, and started backing away.

"See you later, then."

I shut the door slowly, and Vanessa raised her eyebrows. Maybe I should've asked her first.

"Are we seriously going to hang out with this guy?" She asked, "for all we know, he could be a murderer, or-"

I gave her a blank stare. I knew what she was going to say next. She swallowed, and looked away.

"Shawn doesn't seem the type," I told her.

"You don't know him."

I couldn't believe she thought Shawn was like that. I felt uncomfortable saying the word, even though I've never experienced something like that. It was a hard subject, and I knew how she felt about it. I was certain Shawn was a good guy, though.

"I don't, but I want to," I simply said, "and you don't have to go with me."

With that, I walked away from her, so I could go get ready. A hot shower could help with all the tension that just happened. Vanessa would forgive me later.
