Some of my fondest memories of growing up is when my father would take me on long drives. It started when I was six, I had a fit because my sister got to go to the movies without me. I cried, I stomped my feet until my father suggested going for a drive. After he promised ice cream I agreed to go. It morphed into whenever I'd feel stressed, or my dad wanted to spend time with me we'd just drive. No destination, no time limit. We'd blast music and sing along, or have deep conversations about what's going on in our lives. When I turned sixteen he taught me how to drive, and soon I was the one driving.
Today, as I'm driving us around town to show him around I couldn't help the smile on my face. Looking over I see the same thing on my dads face. He's aged since the last time I saw him. His then dark hair littered with white, his normally tanned skin now looking ashen. I could tell that he's stressed out, and that worries me. My father has always been the one to sit back, let things go with the flow. A man of few words. Now he looks... Tired.
After showing my dad my university and where I work we had in the direction of my apartment.
"So, how's Kendall doing?" He asks.
"He's good, he has a boyfriend." I tell him. He looks at me in shock.
"Shy little Kenny has a boyfriend?" He sputters out. Making me chuckle softly.
"Yeah dad. He's good for him." I say. Pulling onto my street.
"He better be." He mumbles. I shake my head and pull in front of my apartment. Turning off the truck.
"We're here dad." I tell him, jumping out and going to the truck bed. Taking out my dads suitcases. He just looks at me with a glare since I'm not letting him carry any. He then just follows behind me as I swing open the door and enter the building. Climbing the stairs.
Kenny decided to stay back because he wanted to finish cleaning the apartment. Even though it's past spotless. Both Monroe and I have tried numerous times that it was clean and ready for my dad. He even pumped up a mattress for me to sleep on.
Reaching the top of the stairs I walk to my door and before I could insert my key the door swings open and Kenny stands there grinning at my dad. I push him back into the apartment so he doesn't creep my dad out. Once inside the apartment I put down the suitcases and turn around to see my dad and Kenny hugging. I see Monroe standing a little further behind Kenny, shifting foot to foot awkwardly. His face slightly anxious.
When they pull back my dad looks at Monroe curiously. "This your boyfriend son?" He asks Kenny.
"Yes. Mark this is Monroe." He introduces them. Taking Monroe's hand in his and pulling him forward.
"Hi sir." Monroe greets.
"It's nice to meet you Monroe. Treat Kenny right.... You know the whole spiel. " my dad jokes, giving Monroe's hand a firm shake.
"I would never mistreat Kendall." Monroe says lovingly, kissing Kenny on the top of his head.
"Great. Now, I know that Meg is coming over soon with the baby." He says just as there's a knock at the door. Kenny opens the door to reveal my sister holding a baby carrier.
"Hey Kendall!" He she greets happily. Walking into the small apartment. Her husband Marcus comes in after her, carrying a diaper bag. He ruffles Kendall's hair as he passed by him. Megan places the baby carrier down and pulls me into a hug, kissing my cheek. Letting go then moving onto my father, who lifts her up like he used to do when she was a child. I turn to Marcus as he falls back on the couch with a sigh.
"When are we going to dinner?" He asks, rubbing his belly with a pout.
"Soon, I'm just waiting for my boyfriend." I say casually. Everybody's head whips towards me in shock.
"You have a boyfriend? Why didn't you tell me?" My sister whines with a pout on her lips. I shrug.
"It never came up." I explain, knowing that that will only annoy her to no end.
"You could have told me, you told me about Kendall's boyfriend." Dad said, pointing at me.
"You asked how Kendall was doing, not me." I say. Walking over to the couch And dropping down beside Marcus.
"Still, I'm your father." He says. I look over at him.
"I'm sorry dad, I didn't think to tell you." I apologize. Monroe's phone goes off before he shakes his head and opens the door. In a few seconds Darren shows up, stepping into the crowded apartment. I stand up and walk towards him, stopping to peck my sister on the cheek, making her pout go away. I get pulled into his arms as soon as I'm I front of him.
"Guys this is my boyfriend, Darren." I say, smiling up at the nervous boyfriend who's clinging to me like I'm his lifeline.
"Could we go grab dinner now?" Marcus pipes in. Making us all chuckle and get ready to head out.
