In the space of two weeks my entire life had flipped upside down. My parents both died in a fire, making not only me, but my five siblings orphans. That was until Johnny's Mam and Dad somehow decided they wanted us, and I don't mean wanted us to come over for dinner. They wanted to foster us, adopt us, whatever terms you prefer. All I know is that in my seventeen years on this earth, in some strange, absolutely fucking twisted way, I have never felt more loved.
The church wasn't very full for the funeral, the sad part was that Teddy's was filled with family, 'friends' (drinking buddies), and people who had once upon a time left Ballylagin after secondary school with the hopes of making it in the world were there too. But those people were the ones who knew the Teddy Lynch who played on the hurling team, the Teddy Lynch that all the girls wanted, they just didn't know the Teddy Lynch who had kids.
Mam's side was significantly less full than his. With only her seven children, Nanny Murphy, my aunt Alice and her husband, Johnny and all his gang, my best friends, a lot of my siblings friends, and a handful of neighbours. The saddest part about it all was that everyone on Mam's side came for us, not for her. We didn't have the best relationship, but jesus christ this whole thing made me realise that people couldn't give a fuck about you when you're alive, it's only when you're dead that things matter to them.
I have my own room at the Kavanagh's house, we all do. Sean was scared to sleep on his own at first, but he's gotten used to it, loves it even. Joey went to rehab the day of the funeral, he's trying to be better, for himself, for Aoife and the baby in her stomach. Johnny's been by my side through all of it, Edel doesn't let him in my room without the door being wide open, so now he sneaks in at night time. But she also has Ollie on watch during the evenings, so Johnny slips Ollie a twenty for him to be quiet.
A week after the funeral I had an Athletics competition with Athletics Ireland, and it was the moment that my life had completely changed, because I would be going to the European Athletics Championships, in July, taking place in Spain.
But now, I was going back for the last week of school and they were leaving me off with the exams because they happened while I was missing.
