"Feet. Hurt," I groaned, leaning on Lisa the day after the marathon.
"Mhm," my friend mumbled in agreement as we walked to Luke's. "I couldn't even walk up my stairs last night—I slept on the couch."
"I would've done the same, but it felt lazy when my bed was sitting there, like, five feet away."
I opened the door and we entered the diner. The only people there were a couple sitting at the counter and Rory and Lorelai leaning their heads on the table.
"Ugh," Lorelai groaned, lifting her head slightly to take a sip of coffee.
I nodded sleepily. "'Ugh' is right. So what happened at the marathon." I could already tell from Lorelai's face that Kirk, once again, had won.
After Ethan and I had broken up last night and Jess and I had shared an awkward encounter, I had gone straight home and had fallen asleep by the time Lorelai and Rory slipped back into the house.
"Kirk won, did his victory lap—."
"Dean and I broke up," Rory added. I shot my sister a sympathetic look. "Don't look at me like that. It was a long time coming."
So last night wasn't a very good night for couples.
The bell rang as Kirk came into the diner holding his magnificent trophy. He purposely rammed it into the back of Lorelai's seat.
"Oh, excuse me. Did my trophy bump you?" He asked in a condescending tone. He wouldn't care if it had bumped her or impaled her.
Lorelai stuck her chin up. "No, Kirk, it didn't."
"You know, sometimes I can't tell where the end of it is. One of these days someone will walk right into it and hurt themself—it's really more weapon than trophy."
Suddenly, Lisa's had launched up to grab Kirk's trophy and she pulled him down to her level. "Kirk, if you don't shut up right now, I will take your weapon and stick it right up your—!"
"Okay," Luke interrupted, pulled Lisa's hand off of Kirk's trophy. "Looks like someone's crabby." He put a hand on the back of my seat. "How about I get you two some coffee?"
"It would be greatly appreciated," I mumbled and he left, Kirk in tow.
Once they were both gone, Lisa finished her threat. "Ass."
I smiled.
"Okay, how about we get some pancakes and eggs for us to share," Lorelai proposed.
Rory shook her head. "Can't. The three of us have to get to school." She showed Lorelai her watch.
My mother gaped. "It took all of us half an hour to get here?!"
"Lots of limping," I reminded. "But I think we have time to get a doughnut.
I forced myself to get out of the seat and I dragged my feet over to Luke. "Luke, four of your finest doughnuts, pl—."
I stopped short as Jess appeared from the other side of the curtain dividing the diner from upstairs.
My mouth went dry. "Hi."
The corners of his mouth tilted up. "Hey." Then he turned to Lisa who had come up behind me. "Hi."
My friend narrowed her eyes. "Hi..."
Luke's glance darted between the three of us. "Hi."
Jess looked up at his uncle. "Hi."
I adverted my gaze and just took the doughnuts Luke handed me. "Thanks."
As I walked back to the table, Lisa pulled me aside. "Okay, there's something you're not telling me."
