"Coffee, coffee, and more coffee." That's how Lorelai started the day. I followed her to a table at Luke's and pulled out my books for school.
"Hey, there's no school. Why are you still studying?" Lorelai asked, giving me a pouty face.
"Well, there might not be no school today, but there is school tomorrow. Studying still applies. I'm not going to fail a class I am already likely to fail, not if I can help it," I explained as Luke handed me my coffee. My mother rolled her eyes and smiled at Luke as he handed us coffee.
"Ugh, you just a Rory wannabe," Lorelai scoffed. "Luke, tell her to stop studying."
"Why? Isn't good that she's studying. Don't you want her to get into a good college and have a good life?"
Lorelai scoffed again, clearly offended. "I didn't go to college. I have a good life!"
Luke walked away.
"What is up with him?" My mother asked.
"I don't know. I think Taylor is on his case again about not participating in holidays and stuff," I said, sipping from my coffee cup.
"I hope Taylor will soon realized that me getting him to paint the diner is the closest to 'participating in holidays' as he'll get," Lorelai said.
"Yeah," I responded. I turned my head to the window and began to enjoy my day of no school and gave a silent thanks to the students that vandalized the school last night.
I had never felt more relaxed than I did in this moment while Lorelai was at work and Rory was at school and I was sitting on the porch, listening to music and reading.
It was sunny out and I was just soaking it in while Babette's cat was curled up next to my, purring.
I closed up the book once I had finished it. I went inside to get food. Somehow, I ended up getting bored and called Leo to come over.
"Hi," I greeted when he walked up to the door. I kissed him and pulled him into the house.
"What was that?" He asked as I led him to my room.
"Nothing. Our neighbors are just being nosy lately," I explained and sat down on my bed with him.
We started kissing and my heart started racing as he pushed me down onto my back.
I was breathing heavily and grabbing Leo's arms. I felt his breath on my neck. Then, he put his hand up my shirt and I suddenly realized that I didn't want to do this.
"Hey," I said. Leo looked at me. "I'm not...ready for this yet."
"Oh," Leo replied as I sat up. "Sorry, then." It was an awkward moment. Then I put my hand on his shoulder. He smiled and I kissed him.
"Soon," I whispered. In his eyes, I saw a flicker of something that looked like doubt. Honestly, this was probably fear that I would become pregnant and be a teen mother like Lorelai. Not that she turned out bad, just that I saw a future for me and things I wanted to do.
"Well, what do you want to do now?" He asked. "You asked me over."
I nodded and dragged him out of my room. "Let's go get lunch. Then we can watch a movie or something. I have all day." I pulled him close and kissed him quickly. I just didn't want him to think I didn't love him anymore.
"Great," he agreed. I handed him his jacket and I thought he whispered, "sorry", but it was too incoherent for me to hear.
"Hi, Lucy. Hi, Leo," Luke greeted.
"Hi," I mumbled as we took a table by the window and ordered our coffee.
There was an awkward tension between Leo and I as I crossed my arms and gave a polite smile when he looked at me.
"So, have you heard from Lisa?" I asked. It was a genuine question. I hadn't seen her in a while. I was sort of guilty, taking Lisa's only friend: Leo. I never wondered if she had any other friends. She turned around and I was so excited, I never thought about if there were any other people. Lisa didn't seem like a particularly social person.
"Um, yeah," Leo responded. I looked up at him.
"Huh?"
"Yeah, I mean, we still text and I have to work with her for a project."
"Oh," I responded. "Does she complain about me? Or say anything?"
"Not really," Leo says, looking out the window. I didn't know why I felt jealous. Was it of Leo or Lisa. Because Lisa was taking my boyfriend or Leo was taking my ex best friend.
"You know, you can hang out with her," I asserted. "It's not like we're not friends, we just on a break." I wanted to say, until I can find it in myself to be a better friend, but didn't.
"I know," Leo said. "I don't need your permission to hang out with her."
If I hadn't been jealous before, I was now. Why would he say it like that? Of course he didn't need my permission, but it would be nice to know if he's hanging out with someone I'm not particularly friends with at the moment.
"Sorry, I—."
"Lucy, you can't get all possessive. You can't expect for you to be the only girl I hang out with!"
I started to speak, but he just interrupted again. "I'm gonna go. Talk to you later." He left and slammed the door.
My ears started to burn and my heart raced. People in the diner looked at me we were making quite the scene. I looked up at Luke with tears in my eyes. He came over and hugged me.
"Thanks," I sobbed, wiping my eyes.
"Anytime, Lucy," Luke grunted. I continued to cry.
Later that day, Lorelai, Rory, and I were walking into Doose's. I had told them about Leo's outburst and they were comforting me.
A motorcycle zoomed by and Lorelai gasped.
"Now that's a motorcycle. Whoever's that is has taste," she commented. I smiled as much as I could.
"Stupid people on motorcycles ruining our town," Taylor ranted, poking his head out of the store.
"Oh my, Taylor, why are you so angry?" Rory asked in fake surprise.
Taylor went inside as the motorcyclist stopped in front of the store.
The three of us turned to go inside.
"Hey!" He called. We turned around. He was talking to Lorelai.
"Oh, thanks," Lorelai said. We started to head inside.
"Take it off." The man took off it helmet.
"Dad!" Rory screamed. She ran to him. I looked to Lorelai as she whispered, "Christopher."
I looked back. Christopher.
