"No, no, no, no," I hissed, rushing to throw my clothes on. "You." I pointed at Jess. "You are going to very quietly get dressed and get out while I distract her."

"Is this really necessary?" He drawled. I gave him a pointed glare. "Yes, yes it is, I suppose."

I finished throwing on my top and ran out into the kitchen. "Hi, Mom," I greeted, my voice squeaking nervously. That was one of my tells. If my mom knew me enough, she would notice it.

And she did.

Her eyes narrowed. "What did you do?" She took a few steps forward and I took a few steps back, still guarding the door.

I rolled my eyes. "Nothing! Why do you always think I'm hiding something?" I heard my window slide open.

"I don't," Lorelai continued. "But you are being incredibly suspicious right now."

"No, no, don't go in," I stuttered as Lorelai came over to the door and shoved me out of the way. I sighed a breath of relief when she opened it up and Jess was already gone. "See?" I said, shaky. "Nothing's there."

She let out a sigh through her nose. "I suppose so." Then she went upstairs to get changed from her night in Hartford.

"Jess?" I whispered into my room. Hopefully he had left but I just wanted to check.

"Over here, Sunshine," his voice called from my closet.

I ran over and opened it up to find him crouching on the ground. "You have to leave. Now. While she's occupied."

He stood up and pressed his body against mine. "I will. Just wanted to say a proper goodbye first." Then he pressed his lips to mine and I let out a sigh as I melted into him.

"Pretty good farewell," I whispered against his mouth.

He kissed me again then said, "The best. Bye, Sunshine."

I smiled and wrapped my arms around my body in the absence of him. "Bye, Jess."

The he slid out the window and I flopped onto the bed, smiling and grinning up at the ceiling as if it could smile back.

...

Lisa: YOU DID WHAT

Me: Stop. Don't make a big deal out of it please

Lisa: Lucy this is a big deal

Me: Yeah, I know

Lisa: Were you safe at least

Me: OMG LISA STOP ACTING LIKE MY MOM

Lisa: Well I am a mom so maybe it's just that. Anyway, Im so happy for you :)

Me: ugh dont make it weird

Lisa: okay whatever. Bye

Me: Bye

I put down my phone but then immediately picked it up again, looking to see if Jess had texted me in the last five milliseconds.

He hadn't.

I knew I shouldn't be so anxious or whatever it was that I was feeling. He would text me. I was sure of it.

And then, just like magic, it happened.

Jess: Did your mom find out

Me: Surprisingly no. maybe she's finally starting to trust me

Jess: probably shouldn't cus her suspicions were right

Me: Well if she had found out you would be dead by now so I don't think that's something you should wish for
