As Rim ushered in a crowd of sympathetic faces, my heart sank at the sight of my cousins' pitying expressions. But amidst the sea of sorrow, I found a glimmer of hope in their unwavering support.
Rim whispered something to Linus, her words lost in the shuffle of the crowded room. But as she settled in beside me, her presence a silent reminder that I was not alone, I felt a small spark of comfort amidst the darkness that threatened to consume me.
Linus's voice quivered as he spoke, his words heavy with sorrow.
"I... I'm so sorry, Anna. I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling right now. If... there was any way to turn back time, to undo what has been done, I swear we would do everything in our power to make it right for you. But it's... too late..."
His voice trailed off, the weight of Mariam's absence hanging thick in the air.
My chest tightened with the realization that my dear friend was truly gone. Tears welled in my eyes, blurring my vision as grief threatened to overwhelm me.
"She's gone..." Linus continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "But she's left you with memories... both good and bad. At least you were there for her, Anna. You were her best friend until the very end."
The finality of his words hit me like a ton of bricks, and I felt myself trembling with a mixture of shock and anguish. The grief was overwhelming, suffocating me with its intensity.
My mind raced with thoughts of what could have been, what should have been, but now it was too late.
"I need to see her. I have to saygoodbye."
I choked out, my voice hoarse with emotion. The thought of Mariam lying cold and lifeless, without me there to bid her farewell, was unbearable.
"When is the funeral?!" I demanded; my words tinged with desperation.
"In an hour." Tamimi replied quietly, his eyes reflecting the sadness that weighed heavily on all of us. "They can't delay any longer. Her family is waiting, and Mariam deserves a proper farewell."
The reality of Mariam's passing hit me like a physical blow, leaving me reeling with grief. I struggled against the hands that held me back, my entire being consumed by the need to be with her one last time.
But amidst the turmoil, my mother's intervention and her voice cutting through the tumult like a knife.
Her words were sharp with anger and accusation, and I recoiled as they struck me like a physical blow.
"Ididn't... I didn't do anything." I stammered, my voice breaking with emotion.
But she was relentless, her accusations driving deeper with each passing moment.
"I'm not a murderer!"
I cried out, my voice raw with anguish.
But she was unmoved, her anger blazing in her eyes.
And then, with a sharp slap across my cheek, the pain became all too real.
I staggered back, the sting of the blow echoing the ache in my heart as I realized that Mariam's death had unleashed a storm of blame and recrimination that threatened to engulf me.
My hand, acting of its own accord, reached up to touch my throbbing cheek, the skin tender beneath my fingertips. I glanced at my mother, searching for some trace of remorse in her eyes, but found none. Instead, she averted her gaze and swiftly exited the room, leaving behind a lingering sense of tension.
As she departed, I couldn't help but notice the subtle tremble in her hands, a sign that perhaps her actions had affected her more deeply than she cared to admit. But there was no time to dwell on her reaction.
My extended family stood frozen, their eyes wide with shock and concern as they took in the scene before them.
Before anyone could rush to my aid, however, a wave of dizziness washed over me, and I felt myself floating on some invisible cloud.
Darkness encroached upon my vision like a thick fog, and the sound of their voices calling my name grew distant and muffled. Numbness enveloped me like a shroud, and with a final gasp; I collapsed at their feet, consumed by the weight of grief and betrayal.
And with that, the world slipped away, leaving me to confront the tumultuous storm raging within me alone.
But little did I know, this was just the beginning of a destiny fraught with secrets, lies, and revelations that would shake the very foundation of my existence.
Anna's fans are requested to hold tight for sh*t is about to get real. I warn ya it will break your heart.
