"Oh my gosh! Oh my—"
I screamed in horror as I was pulled from the tub, coughing and sputtering. Rim's small hand grasped mine, offering support as Olivia and Magnus rushed to my aid.
Their frantic efforts to revive me only added to the chaos, but amidst the panic, their presence was a source of comfort.
Once I was dry and wrapped in a towel, Rim and Olivia helped me onto the bed, their concern palpable. Olivia's attempt to lighten the mood with a joke fell flat, but Rim's laughter was a welcome relief.
As Magnus retreated, Rim and Olivia tended to me with care, ensuring my well-being with each step. Olivia offered me water, prompting a sharp retort from me. Rim's laughter filled the room, earning her a scolding from Olivia, but I found solace in their playful banter, a brief respite from the turmoil within.
Rim dried my hair and Olivia tended to my wounds; I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air.
When Uncle Declan appeared in the doorway, his presence only added to my discomfort. His lingering gaze left me unsettled, a nagging sense of foreboding gnawing at me.
After Uncle Declan's departure, Olivia turned her attention to me, her concern evident in her eyes. Her gentle probing brought forth memories I had tried to bury, and before I knew it, tears streamed down my face.
Olivia's embrace was a lifeline in the sea of my despair, her words of comfort a soothing balm to my wounded soul.
"I heard her voice." I whispered, my voice trembling with emotion. "She was calling my name, begging for help. It was horrifying."
I then looked up at Olivia’s face, searching for a glimmer of understanding. But she was looking away, avoiding my gaze.
“Olivia, she needs my help.” I insisted, my voice pleading.
She shook her head in disagreement, a silent refusal to acknowledge my plea. Without a word, she got up from the bed and headed for the window.
Pulling the curtains aside, she let the bright sunlight flood into the dimly lit room. Then, she stood there, her back turned to me, as if seeking solace in the warmth of the sun's rays.
“She doesn’t need anyone’s help anymore, Anna. She is dead and in a much better place than here.”
Olivia said softly, her words heavy with finality.
My heart pounded in my chest as her words sank in.
“Olivia, don’t say that!” I protested, desperation creeping into my voice. I reached out to stop her, but she ignored my outstretched hand, closing the distance between us.
Standing mere inches away, she placed both hands on my shoulders, leaning in closer to my level. Her eyes bore into mine with a mixture of pity and resolve as she spoke.
“We’ve been through a lot, Anna. Your mom is very upset with you. We had to pay a huge price to keep this from becoming a police case. Just stop talking about her anymore. It’s not good for you .”
She urged, her voice firm but tinged with sadness.
I was stunned into silence, the weight of her words crashing down on me like a tidal wave. I couldn’t believe what she was telling me. In that moment, she reminded me of my mom—heartless and indifferent to my pain.
How could they be so cruel as to repeatedly declare someone close to me 'dead' to my face and then forbid me from even calling their name?
I had been forbidden from attending the funeral, and now I was forbidden from acknowledging her existence altogether.
The injustice of it all is suffocating.
