The grand hall was silent, heavy with anticipation as the kingmakers and nobles gathered before the golden throne. Their faces were solemn, their eyes wide as they looked at the man standing at the foot of the throne.
Iredia stood tall, his shoulders squared, his head held high. His robes were simple, his posture regal, his face calm. Yet his eyes were shadowed, flickering with pain and doubt. The golden crown rested on a velvet cushion before him, its jewels gleaming under the light. It was beautiful, magnificent but it felt cold, heavy.
Chief Omofouma's voice was firm, echoing through the hall. "Prince Iredia, son of King Asuareneme, rightful heir to the throne. The ancestors have spoken, the people have chosen... it is time."
A murmur of agreement rippled through the hall, nobles bowing their heads. "Long live King Iredia, our rightful ruler."
Iredia's heart tightened, his chest aching. Rightful ruler... chosen by blood... but my heart is heavy... my spirit restless...
Chief Omoruyi stepped forward and with a steady voice, he said. "Your father ruled with honour, wisdom and love. It is your duty and destiny to continue his legacy."
Iredia's vision blurred, his heart cracking. My father... my hero... my king... He could see his father's smile, hear his laughter, feel his warm embrace. Memories flooded his mind, his father teaching him to ride, showing him how to lead, whispering words of wisdom.
"A king is a servant first... a protector always... and a leader only by the will of his people."
His chest tightened, his hands shaking. Father... how can I serve?... when this throne feels like a prison, when this crown feels like a curse?
Iredia shook his head and said "I will not be King today"
Chief Omofouma's voice was soft, his eyes warm. "Your father was a great king but he was also a man. A father who loved you, who trusted you, who believed in you." His voice cracked, his face tightening. "He gave his life, to protect this kingdom, to protect you and you would abandon his legacy?"
Iredia's heart shattered, his knees weakening. I loved him... I loved him more than my own life... His eyes burned, his voice breaking. "I honour my father by breaking this curse by ending this cycle of bloodshed and betrayal."
Chief Omofouma's eyes widened, his body stiffening. "Curse? You call this throne, this legacy a curse?"
Iredia's jaw tightened, his voice cracking. "This throne killed him, this crown took him from me. This palace became his prison, his tomb. I cannot... I will not... suffer the same fate."
Gasps of shock filled the hall, nobles exchanging stunned glances. Chief Omoruyi's face paled, his eyes narrowing. "You would defy tradition? You would reject your birthright?"
Iredia's chest tightened, his heart aching. "I honour my bloodline by choosing life, hope and love. I will not let this crown turn my heart to stone, I will not let this throne steal my soul."
Chief Omofouma's face softened, his voice trembling. "But...but the people need you, they trust you, they love you."
"And yet they couldn't see the truth before all this went too far?"
Iredia's vision blurred, his heart breaking. "I love them too.
But he loved Lesley more and he would not subject her to this madness
"That is why I cannot lead them from a throne built on lies and a crown stained with blood. I will protect and serve them as a prince, as their brother but I will not be their king."
