"Sam, can i see the answers for number six?" James said.
"I turned in the assignment already." I said, laying on my side and scrolling on tiktok.
"What!? I thought we'd agreed you would help if needed!" James yelled.
"Too bad. I turned it in, and you know how Mr. Mcleod feels about unsubmitting stuff. Plus, i said i was going to turn it in." I replied.
"You never said that!"
"Yes i did! Maybe if you had better litsening skills-"
"At least i'm not ugly."
"Thats real rich coming from you. You're so basic your favorite color is blue!" I shot back. James's expression went from upset to hurt to blank in a matter of seconds.
"Sam. You know full well that i'm insecure about that." He said, getting up.
I felt a gnawing pain in my chest. I never liked seeing James upset, but this was different.
"James, wait!" I yelled. I tried to grab his shoulder, but he stepped away from me.
"I just... need some space, okay?" He said, his voice quiet. He wouldn't even look at me.
The door clicked shut, and i sat back down.

It's been weeks, and James still won't talk to me. I've tried texting him, DMing him, everything. He doesn't even add me to his private stories anymore. All he does is block me. I'd honestly be lying if i said i didn't miss him- his dumb jokes, his smile, the way he talks... He even ignores me in person. I didn't know what i said would hurt him as much as it did.
"Samuel Ian Tremblay, Are you gonna respond to me or stare at your phone screen?" My Mom asked.
"Oh... huh?" I said.
"I asked you to preheat the oven."
"Right."
"Are you okay? You seriously look sick." My Mom asked, a concerned expression on her face.
"I'm okay. James is just- nevermind." I muttered. I didn't want to make my drama her problem, especially since she has a lot on her plate already.
"James is just what?" She asked, trying to coax an answer out of me.
"I got upset and insulted him and now he's ignoring me. I want to say sorry, but he just won't litsen."
"Try to arrange a meeting with James. Apologize to him."
"And if he still ignores me?"
"Then he's not worth your time and effort."
I smiled. "Thanks, mom."

Sam.
God, i miss him. I feel horrible for ignoring him, but it'll just be weird if i just start acting like the arguement never happened or acted like we were friends again put of the blue. What if he was still mad at me? All this mess just because of an assignment.
He also called you average. I told myself, like that made it any better.
"Why am i so insecure about that?" I murmured to myself.
Oh, right.
I don't remember my mother. She passed away a while after my brother was born and i was going into kindergarten. That was when Marvin started picking on me. He called me weird for not drawing a mom in our family drawings. When we got into middke school, everything got worse. Marvin started purpsefully "forgetting" my name "because i was just so average" or bumping into me because i "blended in". I hated it.
Even though he eventually moved on, i still loathed being called average.
I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. It was Sam, trying to call me through a alternate number. I took a deep breath and picked up.
"Hello?"

"You wanted to meet me here?" James said.
"Yeah. James, i'm sorry. I shouldn't have said what i said. I was angry and being stupid." I blurted. James looked at me with the most relieved expression ever.
"You're not still mad?" He asked.
"I never was."
"But-"
"Don't. Even if i was mad at you at any point during this fiasco, i forgive you." I extended my hand which was had a bouquet of blue flowers.
"I guess blue isn't as 'Average' of a color anyway, huh?" He responded, taking the bouquet. "And, forget-me-nots happen to be my favorite flower."
I knew he knew what forget-me-nots meant, and that i had no idea what his favorite flower was.
"Is this an apology and a confession?" He asked.
"Killing two birds with one stone here." I said. James laughed.
"You're a dweeb, but i love you for it." James said. I leaned in and planted a kiss on his head, and i swear he looked like he was going to pass out.
"You okay?" I asked, holding his face in my hands. James then grabbed my head and kissed me hard.
I stumbled backwards as he pulled away. I felt heat rise to my cheeks. James giggled and grabbed my hand.
"Just make sure we go over the assignment before we turn it in, ok?" James asked, looking at me with those nice brown eyes of his.
"Of course, dear."
Now whenever i look at the color blue, i smile and think of James.
