We get on the bus that's going to take us back home.
"Yes, before anyone asks, you can sit with your friends and it's fine if you don't sit with your project partners." Hardik sir, our teacher says with a resigned sigh.
The group brightens up with smiles and cheers but I am not one of them. To be honest, I am not very close to anyone except Khushi, Tanmay, Harsh and of course, Aarav.
Khushi was obviously sitting with Tanmay. Harsh was seated next to some guy from our class who's name I couldn't recall.
I really should make new friends.
My gaze searches for an empty seat, and I find a palm waving at me, then the owner. It's Aarav and he's gesturing me to sit next to him like it's something extremely obvious.
Like it doesn't make my stomach do weird things.
I take the aisle seat and look at him for just a second longer than usual. He's wearing a comfortable hoodie and his hair looks fluffy. He looks relaxed despite the lingering spots under his eyes.
"Ready to go home?' He asks, ending my 'Obsessing over how pretty he is' session.
"No. This is genuinely the best field trip ever. I actually feel like I might belong here without putting too many efforts" I say. blurting my heart out.
"Mission accomplished" He says, smiling a little, like it's some kind of inside joke.
"Did you have fun?" I ask and he answers with a shrug
"Eh, I've had better"
"Shut up, Banerjee!" I say, rolling my eyes.
"Okay, Sethi"
His face breaks into a genuine smile.
Someone plays 'Baby' by Justin Bieber, on their phone. The volume is barely audible but suddenly everyone's singing along. Including me, obviously.
Oh, for you, I would've done whatever And I just can't believe we ain't together And I wanna play it cool but I'm losin' you I'll buy you anything, I'll buy you any ringAnd I'm in pieces, baby, fix me And just shake me 'til you wake me from this bad dream I'm goin' down, down, down, down And I just can't believe, my first love won't be around, and I'm like"Baby, baby, baby, oh"
The bus gradually grows quiet, except for the soft chattering. Khushi, who's sitting on the opposite aisle seat. She's catching me up on how her interviews went. After a while, I turn around to find Aarav dozed off.
