I've been sitting on one of these uncomfortable hospital chairs for two hours. Or three. I honestly don't know.
Khushi and Tanmay have been calling non stop, sensing something was wrong. Selfishly, I've only sent one cryptic text to both of them, because I didn't have the energy to deal with anyone other than her.
"She got into an accident. She's okay now. I'll call later". I texted them an hour ago and they've been blowing up my phone ever since.
The one person whose calls I can't ignore makes my phone ring and I reluctantly pick up.
"Yes, papa?"
"Aarav, where on earth are you? Do you have any idea how many times I've called you? Where have you been-"
"Sorry papa. Aastha got into an accident and I'm at the hospital"
There's a moment of silence before I hear his panicked, fearful voice
"Is she okay?"
"She's going to be okay. They'll shift to the room soon."
"Are her parents alright? Should I come over? Maybe bring something to eat-"
"Poonam aunty gave me lunch. They're also okay, I guess. It's okay, papa. I'll call if there's any improvement "
"Okay. Take care, baccha".
...
It's been an hour since I talked to dad. It's been 27 minutes and 47 seconds since she was wheeled out of the ICU and into the room.
She was still sleeping when she was moved and aunty told me it's normal for a person to be exhausted after heavy anaesthesia.
She had to get stitches on her abdomen and her hand was operated on. The bone in her forearm was crushed under the rod of the auto.
"Aarav?" Uncle calls out, waving his hand, gesturing for me to follow him.
My legs move towards him without hesitation before my mind even registers what her dad said.
