Pat Cummins is back bowling in preparation of the upcoming Indian Premier League and the June World Test Championship final matchup with South Africa.
Due to an ankle injury he managed during the Test series against India, Cummins, the captain of Australia in both Test and One-Day International cricket, was unable to participate in the current Champions Trophy.
"The ankle is all going strong, [have been] able to give it a good rest and then been building up slowly, which you don't get to do when you play lots of cricket," Cummins stated. "It feels as powerful as it has in a long time. The plan is for it to be alright [for the IPL]. Hopefully, you won't have to worry about it for a while after a few weeks of bowling and regaining your strength."
According to Cummins, an ambassador for Prime, the exclusive broadcasters of the Champions Trophy in Australia, he has had to deal with his ankle on a regular basis, and it started to become a little more problematic during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
We've decided not to have surgery on it or do too much action, just a lot of treatment, he said. I was able to take a few cortisones and get healthy during the past few weeks thanks to this break.
After the WTC final, Cummins hopes to play a full role in the Three-Test series against the West Indies. He is certain he can increase his workload during the IPL. He might miss a few of Australia's white-ball games before the Ashes because they have five Twenty20 Internationals in the West Indies, followed by series against South Africa, New Zealand, and India, before they start playing England in late November.
"You sometimes end up playing more cricket for the entire year by missing the odd tour," he remarked. I believe you used to play everything, but today you definitely strive to make sure the guys are playing as much of the key stuff each year and are at their best for as long as possible. It's simply the nature of things. Everybody is used to it.
The most striking performance from Australia's one game so far, though, has come from Josh Inglis, who led a massive chase with an incredible 120 off 86 balls. Their second match against South Africa was called off before a ball was bowled. After playing alongside Alex Carey, who was selected for his skill against spin, he achieved his first Test century against Sri Lanka last month. The two now play together in the ODI team, with the keeping positions being switched between formats.
"Over the past four years or so, he has run drinks on practically every Australian tour. We've always been aware of his talent, so it's incredible that he's scored two hundred in various forms in the past month," Cummins stated. "He has such energy. He can be batted at any position in the order. He is capable of defeating spin. He can use all of his shots to end an inning as well. merely someone who is entering a truly profitable phase of his career."
Ahead of the WTC final, Inglis will be involved in a difficult selection debate as Cameron Green is anticipated to be available as a batter and Sam Konstas is in the running to return as an opener. Despite not being a selector, Cummins can envision a scenario in which Inglis keeps his position.
"It comes around pretty quick, we're already almost halfway," he stated. "We have undoubtedly been talking to it. Naturally, Test cricket and other [tournaments] take precedence when it's a long way off. However, that becomes somewhat more of a focus as it approaches."
