ANTECEDENT: CHAPTER 42

IN BETWEEN studying in the University and working as the continental boss of North America, Midnight was a busy man. But even how busy he was, he would always go see Happy at the university to check up on her. Fortunately, she was not as weak as before and even asked him to teach her self-defense.

With the old man's go signal, Midnight started teaching Happy how to fight every weekend. But what he was teaching her was not the basic self-defense, but the basic of the hand-to-hand combat ingrained in his brain and body.

He wanted Happy to not just defend herself, but also fight and win. He and the old man will not be with her all the time. She had to know how to fight and win her own battles, so he diligently taught her.

Besides his studies, his mission, and teaching Happy to fight, other matters had also demanded his attention during these past weeks. Orlando had been calling him more and more recently, making him do things he couldn't say no to that it was messing with his brain!

Before, he only had one weakness, his big brother. But now, he had so many people he cared about that one threat from Orlando was enough to make him submit.

"Don't you think something is bothering the boss?" Claud asked Love after breakfast one weekend. Midnight just left to train Happy.

Love frowned and recalled the boss's expression these past few days. Indeed, something was off. "If I didn't teach him hacking, I would've been able to hack his phone to figure what's wrong with him."

Atticus sipped his tea and sat on the single sofa. "He'd been receiving a lot of calls recently."

"Work?" Claud asked.

"No. It's his other phone." Love answered. "The family phone."

"Oh." Claud then remembered something. "When I was in training, I heard from the Chief's assistant that boss is the son of the Fourth Arkhon. But when I checked, there's only one son he has on the record and it's Knight Velasquez, the continental boss of Asia. That got me confused, especially when I saw Knight Velasquez's photo. They look exactly alike." He looked at Love. "Do you know something?"

Love sighed and opened his laptop. "Boss had a very complicated family. He hasn't told me anything, but it's clear that he didn't have a good relationship with them. But if there was a person in his family that the boss cared about, that would be his big brother, Knight Velasquez."

"Are they twins?" Atticus asked, after hearing from Claud, that the two looked alike.

"I'm not sure." Love knew little about Midnight. "I'm sure he'll tell us if he's ready."

Not only were the three worried, but Dominick was also concerned by Midnight's absentmindedness while training his daughter.

Thus, after training, he dragged Midnight to his private office to talk.

"What's up with you, kid?" Dominick asked. "You've been absentminded lately. Something on your mind?"

Midnight opened his mouth to speak to Dominick, but no words followed. Dominick had a lot on his plate already, and adding more would be too much. He didn't want to burden him with his problems. "I'm fine—"

"Continue that bullshit and I will disown you." Dominick threatened Midnight.

Midnight looked at Dominick as if asking if his head was okay. "I'm just your fictional son, you know—"

"Oh, for Fuck's sake, just tell what's wrong." Dominick clicked his tongue. "If something's bothering you, tell me. I can give you advice."

Midnight gave Dominick a dubious look. "Advice? You?"
