ANTECEDENT: CHAPTER 43
MIDNIGHT FELT like he had been spoiled these past few years. He had quickly gotten used to the darkness only after half an hour, but his hunger had become apparent as he stayed longer in this isolation chamber with no light or sound coming through.
Before, he wouldn't have felt hungry because he was used to not eating at all, but these past few years, he spent his life being fed and cared for by the people around him that he had gotten used to eating on time and having snacks in between meals.
A wry smile appeared on Midnight's lips. He felt like he's going to go crazy if he stayed here any longer. He may have a strong mentality not to crumble after staying to cope inside this isolation chamber, but his body was instinctively responding—it was trembling and sweating as if it was being reminded of by something horrible.
His mind couldn't remember, but his body does.
He didn't know how his past self was able to endure this hellish life, but the present him was already struggling.
But he couldn't show that he was. He had to put on his mask and pretend like nothing had happened.
That's exactly what Midnight did while inside the isolation chamber. No food, no light, and no rest. He didn't know how long he stayed there until the door opened and light came through.
"Your father is calling for you."
Wearing an impassive mask on his whole being, he put his hands in his pockets before walking out as if nothing had happened. But the truth was, he was hiding his trembling hands inside his pocket.
He was so hungry he could eat a whole damn cow!
However, he remained emotionless and uninterested in his surroundings. When Orlando saw this, he nodded in satisfaction. It seemed he was still the monster they made. But they couldn't be too sure. Midnight needed to be tested more. Who knows what Dominick Quinn did?
Entering the Fourth Arkhon's office, Midnight only did what he was told, just like before, which clearly satisfied Kelleon, his father.
"It seems you haven't changed." Kelleon commented after observing Midnight. "These photos seemed deceiving now that I see you in person." Saying that, Kelleon spread all the photos of Midnight on the table.
In all the photos, Midnight seemed carefree. Most of it captured Midnight's impassive expression, but a few had captured him smiling.
"Look at these photos. What do you think?" Kelleon asked Midnight.
Midnight obediently looked at the photos one by one with no change in his expression and he said to his father, "I don't know, father."
Midnight knew that if he tried to defend and explain himself, his father would suspect him. In his 'state', he shouldn't be able to think for himself. This was what his father wanted to check and see for himself.
Kelleon frowned but did not talk about the photos anymore. He even asked Orlando to get rid of them.
"Do you know why I called you here?"
Midnight shook his head.
"You've gotten very close to Dominick Quinn. Tell me all the information you gathered these past years."
Midnight obliged, speaking without emotion. He reported everything he had seen, even including information about Happy. He was sure his father would find it suspicious if he didn't know about her. But all this information he was reporting had been approved by Dominick.
