CHAOS THEORY.
Prologue: The Night It Began - Sneak Peek!
•••
When Willow Su first met and became friends with the Washington Twins, she recalled the deep dive she had done on movie mogul Bob Washington after watching one of his creations for the first time.
She remembered learning he had bought an old hotel — Blackwood Pines Hotel, in Canada of all places — and the surrounding land and rebuilt on top of the abandoned resort to have a vacation home for his family. For as long as Willow could remember, Blackwood Pines was barely known as such anymore; replaced with the name of the Washingtons and their wealth.
She'd spent three hours as a young teen looking into the history of Blackwood Pines and the surrounding area — she recalled being so intrigued by the old sanatorium that resided in the nearby area, unsure if it was part of the area of land Mr. Washington had actually purchased.
(They joked constantly that Bob Washington had bought the mountain, but Willow couldn't get access to the actual paperwork showcasing the land, and therefore had no actual confirmation if the whole mountain actually legally was Washington property or if Mr. Washington just wanted everyone to think it was. Willow still tried digging for information now and again, but without directly asking Mr. Washington himself — which she couldn't bring herself to do, because did she really need to know for any reason besides her own curiosity? — Willow was stuck, and it wasn't directly impacting anything anyway.)
And the first time Willow Su had been invited on the 'Annual Blackwood Winter Getaway', she ultimately decided she hated the Washington Lodge. She'd seen some old photos of the hotel that resided there before and it had been beautiful — but people had complained about the nearby sanatorium and the construction happening on the mountain which brought the end of the otherwise peaceful resort getaway Willow would never get to experience.
The interior of the lodge completely contradicted the outside, but completely screamed about the wealth surrounding the Washington family.
Willow was uncomfortable with it all.
Her second 'Annual Blackwood Winter Getaway' was, so far, a little better. Especially with more secure friendships with the rest of the party goers now that most of their senior years were coming to a close.
Willow wasn't horribly close to either of the twins, and she definitely wasn't closer to one or the other. She'd be invited to girl's night with Sam and Ashley, but never Jessica or Emily. Willow would see the twins together or one-on-one, but those were rare and always spontaneous.
And with the whole extended friend group shoved into the large Lodge for the weekend, Willow felt unsure about who her time was meant to be given too — Hannah (and Sam and Ashley, by extension), who'd been the one to directly invite her this time, or Beth (and her brother and his best friend), who'd always been easier to talk too. Or was she meant to evenly split her time between the smaller groups throughout the weekend?
But Willow still stuck close to her own best friend, Matt, as humanly possible. Literally. She leaned even more into his side, his arm squeezing her for a brief moment of acknowledgement. She tucked her sock covered feet under the pillow on the other side of the couch, closing her eyes as she basked in Matt's warmth.
She felt a safe buzz thrumming through her from the alcohol that was slowly leaving her system — it was just after midnight and already Josh and Chris had partied too hard and passed out in the kitchen in the middle of their debate about who had the better pranks so far for the year.
(Her opinion? Chris had the better pranks so far for the year, but that was just because Josh's had more of a tendency to lean toward outwardly mean pranks. And Willow didn't like mean pranks.)
