New World, E-Rantel, VIP Villa, Morning
Jaune perused the various papers and documents strewn across his desk in the office bestowed upon him by Ainz, the Sorcerer King, to fulfill his role as head of security for the Sorcerer Kingdom. Each document brimmed with vital information: details on the summoned undead under his command, data on other creatures from Nazarick at his disposal, and maps outlining the distinct districts of E-Rantel. Ainz's generosity in providing this information was crucial; Jaune needed to understand the forces at his disposal and the city's layout to strategically position his troops for maximum defense against both internal and external threats.
Letting out a sigh, Jaune reclined in his chair after finishing the last document. There were two pressing challenges that needed addressing after reviewing all the documents: establishing a method to monitor his troops remotely and facilitating the swift issuance of orders from afar. In video games, these tasks were effortless, enabling views across the battlefield and quick commands with a few clicks; however, reality proved far more complex, especially in this medieval world.
Setting these issues aside, Jaune opted to stroll through the city, observing its condition. As he walked through the desolate streets, he noticed citizens retreating into their homes, fearful of what their new ruler had in store. He soon arrived at E-Rantel's main plaza, where a squad of death knights patrolled under his directives. He had ordered them to maintain a watchful presence throughout the city. While Albedo and other servants initially resented his newfound authority—especially upon learning that their commands to the Death Knights would be subordinate to his— they were reassured when Ainz clarified that his supremacy over their soldiers remained intact, ensuring Jaune's orders couldn't be wielded against him.
Just then, Jaune's gaze fell upon the Adventurer Guild as Ainz emerged, draped in ornate gold robes and exuding an air of regality, flanked by a maid and summoned angels. Their eyes met, and they began to stroll side by side through the plaza, engaging in light conversation and sharing various thoughts.
"It seems you have embraced your role as head of security with great diligence." Ainz remarked after listening to Jaune's insights on E-Rantel and the best strategies for guarding key areas.
"There still remain several challenges I need to address, particularly regarding remote observation of crucial locations and the rapid dispatch of orders over long distances." Jaune admitted, highlighting the importance of being able to monitor battles from afar and issue commands swiftly—a matter of life and death in the heat of conflict.
"If those are your only concerns, I have just the tools for you." Ainz replied, detailing the gifts he intended to offer Jaune: a mirror of remote viewing and a magical device that would enable him to utilize the message skill.
"These are precisely what I need; I appreciate your generosity." Jaune expressed, grateful for the resources that would aid him in his responsibilities before pivoting to another question. "Have you determined the type of kingdom you wish to establish and govern?" he inquired, curious about Ainz's future plans and the direction his realm would take.
"I have indeed. This question has lingered in my mind throughout the day, and I believe I have finally found the answer. But indulge me, if you will; what do you think is the most critical aspect of ruling a kingdom?" Ainz inquired, having already made his decisions regarding the form the Sorcerer Kingdom would take. His question aimed to reinforce his resolve, should Jaune's response align with his own thoughts. Jaune contemplated the question, delving into centuries of memories until he arrived at his answer
"The most vital element in a kingdom is the ambition of its ruler, for it is their desires that steer and mold the kind of realm they create. A king who seeks strength will forge a nation steeped in conflict, while a king driven by greed will cultivate a realm focused on commerce and wealth. So, Ainz, what is your ambition?" Jaune articulated his answer, reflecting on his experiences in Earthland, where his reign as the dragon king stemmed from a longing for death and destruction of everything in the world. He also recalled the myriad instances where he had quietly observed the ascent and decline of kingdoms, each shaped by the aspirations of its ruler, and how those very aspirations often led to their downfall.
