Set-Up: What happened when you or your partner uttered the first "I love you"?

If you notice any changes to the earlier chapters, I've been crossposting this fic on Ao3 and have tweaked some of the grammar, fixed typos, and changed the writing flow a bit, so if you notice anything different, that's why.

Also, I've decided for the future, Daiya, Monokuma, and Jill will stay in the THH section, and Izuru, Natsumi, Sato, and one of the upcoming characters will stay in the SDR2 section. The rest of them (Ryota, Great Gozu, Yasuke, Komaru, Seiko, Chisa, and the other upcoming characters) will go in a fourth section titled "Other Characters". Sound good?

Shuichi Saihara

The first "I love you" came three and a half months into your relationship.

You're currently on the phone with your parents, explaining to them that you didn't need a new laptop anymore because Shuichi had generously gifted you one after yours broke. To your dismay, just like the time you had them meet Shuichi for the first time, they were being difficult.

"I don't understand what your problem with him is," You said after begrudgingly listening to their bitching. "He was nothing but nice to you when you met him, but you still treated him like trash."

"Yes, because the guy who sent you to jail is such a prize." Your dad said, his voice soaked with sarcasm.

"You're still mad about that? He didn't 'send me to jail', he was doing his job solving a crime."

"I still don't trust him," Your mom chimed in. "The second you do something he doesn't like, he might turn on you."

"You make him sound like a corrupt cop," You scoffed. "He doesn't even work for the police. The only reason he tracked me down when I stole that car was because the owner got impatient with the cops who weren't investigating fast enough for him."

"We know that already."

"Then why are you so distrustful of him?" You demanded. "He didn't do anything wrong. It's not like he beat me up or extorted me or anything, he just did his job."

Your insistent tone seemed to give your parents pause for a moment. You thought that they had maybe taken your statement to heart, but your mom piped up again and dashed those hopes away.

"If he's anything like those bastards I encountered five years ago, he very well could have tried." She told you in an ice cold voice.

You sighed, both frustrated at your parents' stubbornness and understanding of your mom's reservations. At this point, you were stuck between a rock and a hard place.

"I know what you mean, but he's not like that," You said after a minute. "And I'm not going to break up with him, so I don't know what else to tell you."

There was a shuffling on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of irate footsteps stomping away.

"Well, there goes your mother," Your dad said, sounding less angry and more exasperated. "I'll go calm her down and maybe we'll pick this conversation up later this week."

"Yeah, okay," You tentatively agreed, knowing the second conversation about this topic wouldn't be as easy. "Bye, dad."

"Bye, YN."

You hung up and laid down on the bed, mentally drained from that conversation. You'd actually made plans to go out to eat with Shuichi that night, but you weren't really in the mood anymore, so you sent him a quick text.
