Chapter Twenty One - present

"Will I ever measure up to the person that you want me to be? Will I ever be good enough, in your eyes, not mine? I have worked on being the person I am today, for years, yet I can't seem to even compare or come close to who you were when you were my age"

I slid my final boot on, as I turned in the mirror, readjusting the cowboy hat that Ryder had given me, to look the part. Nerves wasn't something that I normally felt, so the lump in my throat was something that I wasn't used to. It had settled there, since it had dawned on me that I was rooming in a hotel room with Bailey and Silas, in a hotel that Rocky was paying for.

I didn't want him to pay for it, just as much as I wanted him to pay for every expense I ever had from now on. He hadn't paid for a single one of my expenses for 12 years, so I was sure that this didn't make a dent in his bull riding bank account. The one that he was probably spending every single penny on his wife.

His wife that took my place at the dinner table. "Hey, you ready?" Bailey's voice droned on from the other side of the room. I had luckily been given my own room, while Bailey and Silas shared the other one, without a single complaint. It was unusual to me, that they weren't complaining about sharing things like a room, but maybe they had grown up.

After my heart to heart with Silas last night, I had seen him in a new light. I had seen him change from that boy that had once teased me, to the boy that I saw now, looking vulnerable as ever. "Umm, yeah" I murmured, giving my shirt one final pull, as I looked at myself in the mirror for one final time. It felt weird, being able to see myself in a full length mirror.

My dusting of freckles along my high cheekbones, accompanied with sunburn and tan from years in the sun. My dark chestnut brown hair had blonde streaks through it from the summer days in the lake and not wearing a hat when I was working on the farms. My skin was tan, and I felt pretty, with my blue eyes staring back at myself. I felt like one of those rich country girls that competed every second weekend.

But, I didn't feel confident. I knew, that I needed to feel confident, so that my horse would be confident. We were a team; we were one. So, I walked to my bedroom door, and opened it, seeing Bailey standing there, waiting for me. "Silas is just fixing his hair, as usual, then we are meeting the others down in the lobby" I was surprised, with how calm Bailey looked and clearly felt, just from his tone.

He was competing today, as was Silas, and the two of them seemed unbothered; like this was something they did every other weekend. And maybe it was, and I was just tagging along for the first time. I gave my brother a nod, right as Silas came out, and we were riding down the elevator, a bag over our shoulders with everything we could need for the day.

None of us said a word, as Silas was on his phone, while Bailey was staring at the top of the elevator while I was looking down. It felt like a scene from a movie, especially when we stepped out, and the rest of our brothers, plus their significant others, waiting for us in the lobby, like Bailey had mentioned.
