Chapter Twenty Nine - present
"How can we go back, and pretend like we are just friends? We aren't just best friends anymore, because a best friend doesn't just drive to the next town over, to come and rescue me from a panic attack. Best friends don't just do that spontaneously, because they should. That's what people who love that other person, does for the person they love, not their best friend"
Worry was creeping in, and settling in my chest, as the aftermath of the past weekend. We were nearing home, after endless naps in the car, constant change overs of drivers, even swapping cars at some point, but Jack had stayed glued to my hip the entire time. Ever since we had encountered Rocky and Aria, who were continuing to their home in the city, instead of back to my house for the week, which I was more than glad about, Jack had been by my side.
Even as we headed back to the competition to watch Bailey, and back in Miles' apartment that I had camped out in for the rest of the time. He hadn't left me, only to shower occasionally. We were used to sleeping in the same bed, so it wasn't a big deal, but this time, it felt different. It felt weird to me. It felt like we were changing, and growing up.
But that wasn't what worried me. What worried me, was the information that Miles had poured into my head. It was the only time that Jack and I had been apart, and Summer was in Parker's room, helping his girlfriend, Layla. Parker and Layla were like two peas in a pod, as they had reconnected in the city after growing up in the same small town that we were about to head in to, being best friends like Jack and I.
Parker and Layla. Summer and Miles. Those two relationships, was like a breath of fresh air. Seeing two people so heavenly in love, was something refreshing. So, when Parker had told me that he wanted to propose to Summer when we got back to the house, maybe down at the nearby lake or something, I felt like my entire world had turned upside down.
I was ecstatic for my brother, but more so that he felt the need to tell me, his little sister. He even wanted me to be the first person to know and be there, to see it all. I nearly squealed in his face, but I contained my excitement, and gave him the biggest hug possible. I was making progress with him, and I saw just a little less hurt in his eyes every time that I wasn't near him.
Hanging out with Miles and Summer these past couple of days, was really reminding me of just how much of a parent Miles had been to me. I was now seeing just how little of Rocky I had seen when I was a little girl, was just as little as I saw of him now. His anger, was still present, that he once had when I was little.
So, as Jack and I climbed out of Mile's truck, knowing Rocky wasn't around, I felt a little lighter. I felt like I could actually get along with my brothers, and maybe spend a little more time with each of them, especially Parker. Parker was someone I had always gotten along with, but we had drifted. I had done that to my brothers. I had done it to each and every one of them.
